I hope this message finds you well.
My name is Ala Hilu, a Palestinian permaculture practitioner and social entrepreneur based in Bethlehem. I've spent years working on grassroots projects that merge upcycling, environmental design, cultural preservation, and regenerative community solutions. I am glad to be part of a growing network of permaculturists who are deeply concerned with the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, I’m reaching out to share a proposal that I believe speaks to both our shared values and urgent needs.
I’ve developed a concept called Regenerative Shelter Production for Gaza — a project to establish a small, sustainable shelter production unit here in Bethlehem. The idea is to produce modular, eco-friendly tents for displaced families in Gaza using permaculture principles. These tents would be designed for repurposing, reducing waste, lowering costs, and bypassing restrictive import barriers. Beyond emergency use, they could become the foundation for future sandbag homes, greenhouses, or agricultural infrastructure — offering long-term regenerative potential.
In the longer term, this project could evolve into a local humanitarian resource, supporting Gaza while also funding permaculture education, projects, and scholarships for Palestinians.
At this stage, I’m seeking eco-designers interested in co-developing a shelter design that aligns with the ecological principles and, as much as possible, with permaculture ethics. It’s important to note that many materials are either difficult to source or prohibited from entering Gaza. Due to severe restrictions imposed by the Israeli Occupation Forces, only a limited list of items is permitted. While the available documentation may be outdated, the following links provide insight into materials currently classified as restricted or dual-use:
