Chapter 3 - Lionpaw
Lionpaw couldn't stop thinking about Softpaw's ominous words. Surely, StarClan would protect them, wouldn't they? Lionpaw forced the dark thoughts out of her head and sat down beside Willowsong to share tongues with Sapleaf one last time. Suddenly, Grasspaw cheerfully padded into camp.
"Birdsong, I'm done gathering your herbs! Now, where's Sapleaf? He said he'd take me out for battle training when I was done with herb duty!" She mewed happily. Grasspaw looked around at the grief-stricken cats.
"W-where's Sapleaf?" She repeated uneasily.
Like an unspoken command, the crowd of ShadowClan cats thinned and Grasspaw gasped.
"No...Sapleaf!" She ran over and collapsed beside his body, desperately licking his fur. "Wake up!"
"Lionpaw, Softpaw, Willowsong, and Grasspaw; you will sit vigil for Sapleaf tonight. Cinderleaf and Mousewillow will bury him at sunrise tomorrow." Meowed Nettlestar. "And Grasspaw, your new mentor will be Nightfang. We musn't delay your training."
The next morning, Lionpaw and Willowsong showed Cinderleaf and Mousewillow where to bury him. Softpaw stayed behind because Birdsong needed him in the medicine den.
"He always loved looking out at the lake." Willowsong meowed sadly.
"Then this is where we'll bury him." mewed Cinderleaf. Lionpaw began scooping at the marshy ground, making a big enough hole for Sapleaf's body.
"Was a good, loyal warrior, this one." grunted Mousewillow as he dug at the ground with his large paws.
"Twolegs." Cinderleaf spat. Before long, they gently lowered him into the grave.
"Goodbye, Sapleaf. May StarClan light your path. May you find swift running, good hunting, and shelter where you sleep." Willowsong whispered. She pushed the dug-up mound of dirt over Sapleaf's body. "Well said. Now, let's head back to camp." Cinderleaf suggested. The four cats walked back to the ShadowClan camp, where Lionpaw headed to the apprentices' den. There, Foxpaw and Beepaw were meowing excitedly. The two toms turned to face Lionpaw.
"Did you hear? Nettlestar's going to make us warriors soon! Foxpaw purred happily.
"I caught three lizards and a starling in my assessment!" boasted Beepaw.
"Really?" Lionpaw mewed in awe. "Well, I'm going to my first Gathering tonight with Grasspaw!"
"It's so cool!" said Foxpaw.
"You can hear stories from the elders of other Clans and meet other apprentices!" added Beepaw.
"I can't wait! Do you know where Grasspaw is, anyways? I don't think she knows yet," Lionpaw asked.
Foxpaw shrugged.
"Well, I'd best get going to look for her," Lionpaw said. She left the two older toms to their conversation and padded to the elders' den. She saw Grasspaw sitting beside Cinderleaf as the elder she-cat was telling her one of her grand tales.
"Hi, Lionpaw!" mewed Grasspaw, who appeared quite cheerful contrasted with her gloomy mood earlier.
"Hey, Grasspaw! Guess what? We're going to the Gathering tonight!" said Lionpaw.
"Yes!" meowed Grasspaw.
"Grasspaw, Lionpaw, are we done interrupting? May I finish telling you about the dogs?" scolded Cinderleaf, though her mew was teasing. Grasspaw flattened her ears sheepishly. In the den, Lionpaw heard Nettlestar's muffled mew.
"Oh! It's time for the Gathering!" Lionpaw said, excited. She rushed out of the elders' den with Grasspaw a tail-length behind.
“Sorry, Cinderleaf!” Grasspaw mewed.
Lionpaw leaped off the tree-bridge and found the group of apprentices chattering away.
"Hi, I'm Pebblepaw! What's your name?" mewed a WindClan tom who noticed Lionpaw hanging around.
"I-I'm Lionpaw!" Lionpaw replied.
"Is this your first Gathering?" the tom asked.
Lionpaw nodded.
"Well, like I said before, I'm Pebblepaw! Those two she-cats are Flowerpaw and Oakpaw from RiverClan, Willowpaw over there is from WindClan, like me, Applepaw and Palepaw from SkyClan, and Owlpaw and Fernpaw from ThunderClan" mewed Pebblepaw. Lionpaw nodded. Who's your friend over there?" Pebblepaw mewed.
"Oh, that's Grasspaw! She's Nettlestar's kin." said Lionpaw. She pricked her ears as Rabbitstar yowled for silence and the Gathering began.
Chapter 4 - Lionpaw
"WindClan brings alarming news. Twoleg scent has been found deep into our territory, drenching almost all other scents. Clearly, they are planning an invasion." he said.
"We have already lost a warrior because of Twolegs," agreed Nettlestar. "We will all grieve for Sapleaf."
"RiverClan is endangered by the Twolegs. Dawnflurry and Hollowstream have suffered injuries from them. Their wounds are small, but they are deep," mewed Silverstar, concerned.
"SkyClan has scented Twoleg in many places around our territory, but no fatalities. But three Clans suffering? Clearly, they are coming after us all." added Tinystar, his claws digging into the tree branch.
"Look at the moon!" yowled a cat in the crowd. Thick, heavy clouds obscured the moon, and it began to rain. Heavy, fat drops poured from the sky, instantly drenching all the cats in the clearing.
“ShadowClan, with me!” meowed Nettlestar loudly. All the ShadowClan cats followed Nettlestar out and onto the tree-bridge.
“Is StarClan angry?” Lionpaw overheard Softpaw ask Birdsong.
“I suppose so, but I’ve no idea why.” admitted Birdsong. “All the leaders were talking about were the Twoleg issue.” she tried to shrug it off, but it was clear it bothered her more than she was letting on.
As she padded back to the apprentices’ den, she lay down and wondered; Why would StarClan be mad at the Gathering? It was peaceful! thoughts raced around in her head, developing theories, until she fell into a dark, nightmarish sleep.
