Chapter 5 - Oakpaw
“Oakpaw, are you awake? We’re going to do hunting practice today with Moonwhisker and Flowerpaw!” mewed Suntail, sticking his head into the apprentice den.
“Coming,” Oakpaw groaned groggily. She padded out of the den, sleep still clouding her eyes. Outside, Flowerpaw, Moonwhisker, and Suntail were already waiting for her.
“Come on, slow slug!” teased Flowerpaw.
“Slow slug yourself!” retorted Oakpaw, chasing after her friend. They skidded to a stop once they reached the river. They squealed in delight as the two she-cats tussled and wrestled
“Be glad you aren’t ThunderClan with all the noise you’re making, you would’ve scared all the prey away!” scolded Moonwhisker.
“Sorry, Moonwhisker.” mewed Flowerpaw.
“Now, Flowerpaw, take a seat at the bank. Be careful not to fall in!” instructed Suntail. He sat down himself beside Moonwhisker.
“What is different about the way Flowerpaw and Moonwhisker are sitting?” Suntail asked Oakpaw.
“Flowerpaw’s shadow is over the water, but Moonwhisker’s isn’t?” guessed Oakpaw.
“Correct!” mewed Suntail approvingly. “If you cast your shadow over the stream, the fish will see you. If you position your shadow behind you, using the sun, you can scoop up the fish, and it won’t know what hit it!” he finished. He demonstrated, flipping a fish out of the stream, where he slammed a paw on its gills, killing it. “Thank you StarClan, for this prey.” he whispered.
“Can I try?” asked Oakpaw.
“Of course,” purred Suntail.
Oakpaw sat her haunches down on the ground. She spotted a fish, and oh-too-soon it saw her and flapped away as she scooped her paw, trying to grab it.
“Tough luck,” mewed Flowerpaw sympathetically. She took her place at the bank and quickly saw a fish. Flowerpaw’s paw shot into the water as she hooked the creature out of the water, killing it like Suntail had demonstrated.
“Great job!” said Oakpaw. “Can I try again?” she asked. Suntail nodded, and Oakpaw sat, careful not to cast her shadow over the water, but she missed another fish. Oakpaw hissed in frustration.
“Can we head back to camp?” Oakpaw mewed angrily. As she, Flowerpaw, Suntail, and Moonwhisker approached the camp, a terrible wail echoed from the medicine den.
“NO! HOLLOWSTREAM!” Oakpaw recognized Berrytail’s voice, taut with pain. “You can’t be dead! Hollowstream! Brother!” she shrieked. Oakpaw and Flowerpaw stuck their heads into the medicine den. Larkwhisper glanced at them and ushered them out.
“I’ll give you a moment, Berrytail,” he mewed quietly.
“What happened?” Flowerpaw whispered, worry in her eyes.
“Hollowstream succumbed to his injuries.” Larkwhisper said sadly.
“Oh,” mewed Oakpaw, in shock. A thought struck her. Oddly, it wasn’t grief, but curiosity. Lionpaw! Didn’t her father die from Twolegs a few sunrises ago? Hollowstream died from Twolegs, too! I don’t think this is a coincidence. She thought.
Chapter 6 - Oakpaw
“Flowerpaw!” hissed Oakpaw. It had been two sunrises since Hollowstream’s death; both days Flowerpaw was too busy to talk.
“Do you remember Lionpaw? From the Gathering?” she asked.
“Yes,” said Flowerpaw. “Why?”
“I remember her being sad when Nettlestar was talking about…Saptree? No, Sapleaf! Yes, that’s his name. Nettlestar was saying that Sapleaf had died from Twolegs, and Sapleaf was Lionpaw’s dad. Hollowstream just died, from Twoleg injuries. I don’t think this is random, Flowerpaw. I have to talk to her. We’ve got to figure out what’s going on.” explained Oakpaw. Flowerpaw nodded.
“I have to do Mossyrock’s ticks! StarClan knows how many are in that pelt of his,” groaned Flowerpaw. “Tell her to meet us at the border, tomorrow.” she said. “We can discuss some more then.” Oakpaw flicked her ear in acknowledgement.
“Suntail, may I go hunting?” called Oakpaw.
“Yes, but don’t be long!” he replied. Oakpaw sprinted out of the camp, hoping Lionpaw might be around the border somewhere. Luckily, she picked up her faintly familiar ShadowClan scent.
“Psst! Lionpaw!” whispered Oakpaw. Oakpaw heard muffled mews and Lionpaw padded over to her.
“What are you doing here?” Lionpaw mewed.
“I came looking for you.” Oakpaw replied. “Hollowstream died, and he also suffered from the Twoleg objects. I think something dark is at work here, and it won’t stop until we’re all dead.”
Lionpaw’s eyes grew huge. “T-that’s exactly what Softpaw s-said. How did you kno-”
“Who’s Softpaw?” asked Oakpaw.
“He’s my older brother,” mewed Lionpaw. “He’s a medicine cat. And, er, I’m sorry about Hollowstream.” Lionpaw said sympathetically.
“He could help!” Oakpaw exclaimed. “Softpaw could ask StarClan for guidance!”
Lionpaw shook her head. “You can’t tell anyone, but I overheard Softpaw and Birdsong talking about why StarClan was silent last half-moon. I don’t think they can help this time around.”
“Lionpaw!” a voice called in the distance.
“I have to go, that’s my mentor calling for me.” Lionpaw said abruptly.
“Okay, meet me at here again tomorrow, sundown.” mewed Oakpaw.
“Will do!” yowled Lionpaw as she sped off.
