Saadi Shirazi, born around 1210 in Shiraz, Iran, was a distinguished Persian poet and prose writer.
He is famous for his significant works "Bustan" (The Orchard) and "Gulistan" (The Rose Garden), which blend moral wisdom, practical advice, and the spirituality of Sufism. His writings, known for their insightful reflections on human nature and morality with elegant simplicity, have been translated into numerous languages, establishing him as a major Iranian classical poet with influence extending into Western literature.

Saadi Shirazi writes in his famous book "The Rose Garden" ("Gulistan"):

Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.

If one member is afflicted with pain,
Other members uneasy will remain.

If you have no sympathy for human pain,
The name of human you cannot retain.

بنی آدم اعضای یکدیگرند
که در آفرینش ز یک گوهرند

چو عضوی به درد آورد روزگار
دگر عضوها را نماند قرار

تو کز محنت دیگران بی غمی
نشاید که نامت نهند آدمی

Universal Connectedness

The poet opens with the idea that all humans are parts of one body and interdependent, emphasizing that pain or happiness in one member affects the whole body. The other should not remain indifferent to the fate of others and that if one member of the human body suffers, the other members cannot remain at peace. This idea forms a foundation for expressing sympathy and mutual responsibility in human societies, reminding us that as humans, we have a duty to be sensitive and caring towards each other.

Relevance in the Context of Climate Change

Saadi's message is especially very relevant and important in the current context of climate change. His poem, which describes all humans as parts of one body, can be used as a metaphor for global challenges such as climate change. In fact, this concept can help us understand that the effects of climate change on a particular region or population indirectly affect all humanity.

Key Concepts for Global Solidarity

This imagery emphasizes these important concepts:

- Global solidarity: In addressing climate change, international cooperation and solidarity are essential. Environmental issues in one country can have global impacts, and therefore, collective solutions must be considered.

- Understanding of shared responsibility: Saadi's poem reminds us that we should be sensitive to each other's pains and problems, as they ultimately affect us all. This concept in the context of climate change reminds us that protecting the environment and reducing the negative impacts of climate change is everyone's responsibility.

- Emphasis on common humanity: In the face of global challenges like climate change, Saadi's portrayal of humanity as a single body can help strengthen empathy and international collaboration irrespective of race and religion.

Therefore, this poem can serve as a call to collective and compassionate action to address global issues like climate change and plays an important role in encouraging responsible and sustainable action.
