Historical development of traffic light control systems

The development history of traffic light control system can be traced back to the mid-19th century, when European countries such as the United Kingdom began to popularize carriages. However, due to the lack of traffic indication equipment to guide vehicle traffic, carriage injuries often occurred. In 1868, the world's first road traffic signal light with red, yellow, and green colors appeared in Britain. Since then, a wide variety of traffic lights based on red, yellow, and green colors have emerged in Western countries, and a new profession has emerged - traffic police.

In China, the application of traffic lights began in the British Concession of Shanghai in 1923. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, traffic lights gradually appeared in cities across the country. With the development of the national economy, the transportation industry has also been developed, and signal control equipment with programmed control functions has begun to be introduced into China for application. From then on, traffic police no longer had to manually control signal light switching to manage road traffic.

The development of traffic light control system has gone through multiple stages. At first, the traffic lights only had three colors: red, yellow, and green. Later, there were traffic signal controllers with mechanical devices that could manually control the switching of traffic lights. With the development of technology, traffic lights have gradually achieved automated control and are managed and dispatched through computers.

Nowadays, the traffic light control system has achieved intelligent management, obtaining traffic flow information through video monitoring, sensors and other technical means, automatically adjusting the timing scheme of signal lights, and improving road traffic efficiency. Meanwhile, with the continuous development of Internet of Things technology, traffic light control systems will also achieve closer integration and collaborative development with other fields such as intelligent transportation systems and smart cities.
