The Ultimate Guide to Writing Advertising Copy That Sells

What is one thing that (almost) every business wants more than anything? To sell!

However, before you can do that, you’ll need traffic coming in and if you want to get traffic fast, you’ll have to do advertising.

Now, just because you’re paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars doesn’t mean it’s a guarantee for a high-click rate. It all boils down to writing an advertising copy that pushes people to take action.

So before you set up your next ad campaign, here are 4 powerful tips in writing stellar advertising copy!

Solve Your Customer’s Problems

When it comes to writing ad headlines, there’s one thing you should remember, and that is to show people solutions, not keywords.

Keywords are important, but to truly stand out, your headline should highlight the visitor’s end goal. Ask yourself, “What does the user want to accomplish and how can you fulfill that?”

Here’s a good example from L.L Bean. Instead of highlighting the benefits of a dog bed for dogs, it solves the problem of the dog owner. Well, who wouldn’t want more space in their own bed, free of their furry friend?

Target The Emotional Side of Your Prospects

There are visitors checking websites with an end goal in mind, but there are also others who are just casually browsing for more information.

One effective way to spur this type of visitors into action is by injecting emotional triggers to your copies.

The fact is that people don’t make decisions based on logic all of the time. The majority of the time, purchasing decisions are made with emotion as a primary deciding factor.

Some of the most powerful emotional reactions include fear, anger, envy, or disgust. By finding the right words that hit these emotions, your customers can’t resist clicking that BUY or BOOK button.

Check out this viral headline from Problogger.net. By using the phrases “quit a job,” “move to paradise,” “get paid,” and “change the world,” this headline makes anyone with a 9-5 job envious. And if you promote this blog in an ad, we’re pretty sure this will earn a lot of engagement.

Focus On The Benefits

One common mistake some copywriters do is focusing more on the features, rather than the benefits. With only a few characters ad copies allow, you wouldn’t want to waste space by writing all about your product or service.

Use these precious character count to get visitors to take action. Tell them how your product will improve their lives.

Here’s a perfect example from Basecamp. Although this did not appear on their ads, this surely makes a good ad headline.

With businesses now shifting to a WFH set-up, Basecamp shows how their tool helps remote teams work together. And look at those Before and After Basecamp highlights.

Turn The FOMO Mode On

Did you know that 60% of millennials make purchases based on FOMO? The fear of being left out can be a real catalyst for change. With the right copy, you can use this trigger effectively.

You can start by using the words “Limited,” “Hurry,” “Last Stock Available,” or “1 Hour Left.” These phrases create urgency that make people want to just buy right away without thinking much about it. Think of Early Bird promos or Exclusive events, and you’ll get an idea of how FOMO works.

Booking.com does an excellent job at these FOMO copies like the one below. Imagine checking on available rooms and seeing this warning? Wouldn’t you book that room right away?
