"Various Electronics For Your Bose 2.2 Speakers" (Craigslist ad)...
Note: If U care 2 simply 'donate' them 2 me that's GR8 2! =D U may find all my 'Back Story' about Y I am curious about these interesting, so read on... I'm looking to trade computer & stereo related parts & gear for Bose 2.2 speakers. Ideally I would like 2 pairs with the surrounds in good condition, not rotting, but IF they are rotten that's OK 2, just not worth as much. I would have to get the drivers repaired or replaced.
I'm also curious what they would sound like with really 'fancypants' drivers like Morels & others. I have a lot of custom 4 ohm Morel MW266. The regular version is higher ohms, but customizing it lower improves the sound. The stuff I do now uses really big woofers so don't need them. Those Morel mid/woofers sell for $134 each, which is way more than the Bose are worth (about $30 per pair).

Actually on 2'nd thought I shouldn't put such fancy drivers in the Bose, as it reduces the value of the drivers which are new & I could sell separately (like $100 each no problem) LOL But you get the idea... Could also improve the sound by using 'line source' Linaeum style silk membrane tweeters located differently so they are 'time aligned' with the mid/woofer there. bla bla...
Since the design is so old surely all the patents that may be related to them have long since expired (17 years max?) & re-releasing an 'audiophile' version might B a really interesting product U think? =) Hmmm.... could put felt around the drivers 2 eliminate 'diffraction' issues, recess the tweets 4 'alignment', & revamp the grills & frames there 4 more sonic transparency, & make the cabinets more 'update modern' style (but same overall shape & size) = could B really interesting! =D
Doing some quick calculations in my head right now it seems they would end up costing about the same in the end as doing these big tube things which are 'economy of scale' design (best 'bang for the buck')...

The advantage of a 'Bose-based' form factor (similar size & shape, but nicer sound) would be for people who want some really good clarity & stuff but don't need tons of volume capability or really deep bass. Could just mount them 'up in the corners of a room' out of the way of EVERYTHING =D
I already have very nice speakers but I remember going into a record store back in 1990 or so who were playing 'It Takes Two' by the girl group 'Seduction' & it sounded very nice. They sounded much better to me than any other Bo$e $y$tem I ever heard, especially those gawdawful 'sub/sat/things with no highs or lows & no lower mids either LOL!! I swear most Bo$e stuff is worse than a typical 'clock radio'... but these 2.2 had a nice even (though veiled) texture that was smooth & nothing really seemed missing or 'jumping out at you' like the others & their flaws. Have you heard N E Bo$e Model$ that sound better?? =) Inquiring minds wanna' know! I'm happy to take 'Inspiration' from N E where, so long as it is justified by PERFORMANCE.
I have even worked at stores that sold Bo$e stuff & the running joke was 'If It's Got No Highs & It's Got No Lows It Must B A Bo$e' LOL!! I'm not an evil person so I would just pick the BEST performing $y$tem in each price bracket & promote that, like at a particular store 'Silo' in Colorado they had a nice Sony receiver with DSP surround effects & some particularly 'neutral' sounding little 'Wharfdale' for surrounds & a certain 'Cerwin Vega' mocel for mains & the other workers would make fun of me for always selling customers the same $y$tem & I was all: "Well I keep the money coming in so what's the difference? I've heard the others & these sound the best." =)
The other stuff at that store doesn't sound as nice. Give people something they can actually enjoy using yes? But yea' good gawd those Bo$e 901 there were even worse than their Bo$e 'sub/sat' stuff OMG LOL!! Nature is dirty, & nothing is perfect. Take inspiration where U can find it, like sometimes a gal with a so-so face might have a really nice body or whatever, so 'Look Around' B 4 U make up your mind! LOL I'm not here 2 rag on Bo$e. The 2.2 sounded GOOD, though not up there with 'audiophile' stuff. =D Come 2 think of it I never worked N E where that sold model 2.2. I probably would have bought some.
My fave speakers at the time were 'Nextel' coated 'velvet flocked' type Dahlquist models, which were really just rebranded 'Magnat' (from Germany). They have really clear bass & nice 'imaging'. Once I finished my 'DIY Of Perfection' experiments to arrive at the 'TOOBZ!' design, I literally threw all my other stuff (including 'box-based ones) in the trash skip at the dump when I went down to trade PC gear with them LOL I mean I could have sold it all but it was like a mental thing 2 'Purge Yourself Of Slavery 2 Box Designs' HAHA ~ kind of like throwing out printers when ink cartridges became such a horrific ripoff that all a printer really is these days is an 'Ink Rape Device' =))
But I digress... these 'slanted baffle' Bose concepts can work well high up in corners so quite different from other 'box' speakers. I'm really curious 2 C what I can do 2 'mod' this vibe. I looked into doing some long slender tube designs based on my big ones, but even though it's possible to get some bass out of them with a quite long tube, the vibe is not as nice as these old Bose guys. Slim & slender stuff tends to compress and recess the low mids & bass & just doesn't doesn't have the 'wide and free' surface area to get natural sound in that area, so it's kind of a non-starter & maybe time to 'revisit the box' so 2 speak, but a very certain box = the Bose 2.2 vibe! =D
N E wayz... The record store had 4 of these speakers = 1 up high in each top corner of the big room, & I asked what they were using... but that was before I got into the 'high end audio' biz with the 'You-Are-There' sounding stuff (sometimes ~;) ... so hoo noze. It's no big risk if I'm just trading things for them, as I get freebies all the time =D My gain is YOUR gain 2! I can share tips what sounds GR8 4 your needs if U R curious.
