The Gnomes vs Ikea – It’s War!
Furniture giant Ikea attacked the little guy in its latest ad. Now he’s fighting back.
Walter, the self-proclaimed leader of protest group OMG (Opposing Mindless Gnomism), has issued a stark warning to the Scandinavian flat pack retailer – acknowledge the role Britain’s beloved gnomes have to play in our gardens, or Billy gets it!
In video reminiscent of Reservoir Dogs, to be delivered to Ikea’s head office today, gnome Walter defends the diminutive garden characters before revealing he’s taken Billy bookcase hostage. The foot tall radical is demanding an admission from Ikea that gnomes do matter, before Billy becomes sawdust.
In an exclusive interview, maverick Walter said: “Gnomes have been part of the British gardening landscape for generations. We’ve given pensioners with a penchant for collectibles a purpose and made the nation’s children smile. But Ikea’s now decided we’re past our sell by date.”
“Us gnomes aren’t aggressive by nature – we’re more used to handling fishing rods than offensive weapons – but you can only push somebody so far. We’ve got nothing against Billy personally. We know the bookcase has pride of place in homes across the world but we need to make a stand against this orchestrated attack on gnomes. Gnomism can’t be tolerated.”
Eddie Riby, Director of UK Water Features, where Walter is official mascot, added: “We know gnomes are a bit like Marmite – you either love them or hate them – but they do have a huge fan base out there. Walter’s standing up for all our customers who love their gnomes. It’s a David and Goliath battle but he’s got our full support.”
