PERSONALITY

River Yang moves through life with a quiet kind of caution, shaped by the loss of his mother and a father who dismissed anything he considered too sentimental only for the sake of his children becoming a little tougher and stronger. Before everything happened, he was once a happy, bright boy with a complete family, a full heart, and a wide smile, but the cold tragedy he began carrying just before he turned six slowly shaped him into the complex person he is today. And from that very day onward, River Yang has always held a special, undefined feeling toward his brother who started it all.

Outwardly calm and unreadable, River hides a sharp mind and a subtle streak of mischief. He uses small, calculated acts of chaos in his daily life to lighten the burdens he keeps to himself, often thinking that it’s one of the few ways he can cope with the grief he has carried for years. His words are often harsh. But though he rarely shows his real emotions or laughs, he is someone who feels deeply (and sometimes too deeply), always noticing the smallest details and, most of the time, trying his best to help the people around him through thoughtful gestures of support. On the other side of his personality, River is actually a warm person who likes to share. Unless it's for the sake of a joke, he’s not the type to leave a friend behind, even if it means losing his own chance at something. His older brother once said that River was like a cat, and when they met again years later, he doubled down on it—apparently, he now refers to River as a tabby ginger cat (and occasionally a dog, since he tends to brighten up whenever someone gives him even a simple praise).

Raised in a Chinese family that values knowledge, River grew up loving books and developing a curiosity about many different things. He is the type of person who can learn anything quickly, yet he refuses to be called a genius and insists that everything he knows is simply the result of hard work and genuine interest. Aside from books, he also enjoys playing games because strategic thinking helps him keep the darker thoughts in his head at bay. Other thing he loves to do is fishing. If anything, he has always felt a certain attachment to water, as if the currents could understand him better than anything else.

Another thing worth noting is that River rarely uses honorifics unless it’s necessary (for example, when addressing someone important) or when he feels a close bond with that person. Aside from that, he will only address people by their first names or last names even if they’re older than him. Even so, there’s also an exception for elders as they always remind him of his most favorite person in the world that is his grandmother. Because of his tall stature and mature looks, it seems like people often mistake him for a fully grown adult. Yet he doesn’t really mind and even takes advantage of it since he would rather be seen as someone reliable than a clueless kid who can’t do anything right.

BACKGROUND

River is the youngest of two siblings. His father works as a university lecturer, while his late mother was a medical herbalist. His older brother (30) was a bully and troublemaker who eventually murdered their mother when River was just 6 years old. Because he was already 18 at the time of the crime, the brother was tried in the Crown Court. He was initially on the verge of receiving a life sentence, but their father bribed a psychiatrist to fabricate a medical report indicating a mental disorder, aiming to secure a lighter punishment. Armed with this report, the defense argued “diminished responsibility,” claiming that River’s brother was not fully conscious or in control of his actions during the killing.

River grew up carrying the weight of his family’s past. His older brother’s criminal history made him an easy target, and from a young age, he faced bullying and judgment from peers who viewed him through that lens. In elementary school, he changed schools several times, never quite finding a place where he belonged. For a time, he even moved in with his grandmother, attending school there to escape the constant judgment. The people in South Shields treated him kindly, but by then, he had already grown into a quieter, more withdrawn person, speaking little and keeping most of his thoughts to himself.

He moved back to London during high school so he could apply to a better university. Due to his handsome face and tall stature, River somehow became slightly more popular than he actually was. He still decided not to stand out too much, but whenever there were students being bullied like he once was, he would approach them and offer help.

A strict father figure who became even harsher with his children after the passing of his wife. Arthur loved his wife dearly and was the first to find her dead body. Though shaken, he forced himself to remain rational. His wife was gone, but perhaps he could still save his eldest son. On the day of the murder, he hurried to retrieve psychiatric medication that had once belonged to his late father and gave it to Ethan, forcing him to swallow a pill so he could devise a plan to secure a reduced sentence.

Arthur is known to the public as a university lecturer, yet he also owns several other businesses, one of which is a construction supply store. He is quite close to those in positions of power within the government, and is secretly involved in corruption schemes related to the construction of buildings and roads, using his businesses to launder illicit money.

After his wife’s death, Arthur hid all of her belongings and their photos together in storage—some were even thrown away—and did not allow River to keep a single item that belonged to his mother. The only thing left in sight was an old piano, which remained on display merely as decoration. He forbade River from playing it, yet the young man would still occasionally try when his father was not present at home. Despite his emotional detachment and his tendency to be harsh and cold toward his children, he still tries to provide for their needs by paying their tuition fees and fulfilling his obligations as a provider.

Black hair, black eyes. While River inherited more of their mother’s features, Ethan resembles their father more closely. Although Ethan was once the role model River looked up to, every time his name is mentioned, River shows a forced expression and a smile filled with disgust. He is in fact the older brother with whom River has a love-hate relationship.

Compared to River, who is only beginning to act out in order to feel a sense of freedom from the burdens he was forced to carry because of his older brother, Ethan is a genuinely mischievous troublemaker. And unlike his little brother, who tries to remain modest and keep a low profile, Ethan is the type of student who consistently ranks first and earns numerous awards. Those around him tend to overlook his misbehavior simply because he is intelligent. However, that very leniency is what led him to lose control after falling into the wrong social circle.

Ethan has committed many crimes since he was young. From secretly drinking alcohol to stealing medications made by his mother to resell them, he has done it all. He became accustomed to doing fraud during his teenage years which eventually made it easy for him to join a criminal syndicate after his release from prison. As far as River knows, his brother has removed himself from the family registry and changed his legal name after reintegrating into society. Due to his lack of formal higher education, he was said to have worked as a restaurant waiter and receptionist.

River himself has long grown weary of being associated with his brother’s increasingly irrational criminal behavior. However, there is little he can do. With his brother still alive and out there, River has gradually and unintentionally been dragged into even worse and more dangerous troubles. River had prayed fervently, but perhaps not even God could save him from the sin that runs in the blood of his family, a curse in their fates in ways he could neither escape nor undo.

River knows his life is always full of surprises, but he never expected this man to become one of them. When they first met in South Shields, the young lad didn’t expect much beyond showing him around the small coastal town where he grew up, making him often wonder how everything turned out this way. Their relationship slowly shifted after River casually pointed at the night sky, saying that Arcturus made him less lonely because it reminded him of his late mother, as it is Arwen’s favorite star. Rather than reacting casually as one normally would, the older man decided to respond by stopping their walk and suddenly leading a prayer for River’s mother and the lad himself. He thought the man was truly weird, but Saeran’s action somehow gave him a sense of comfort, and, deeply moved by it, he began to consider opening up to the new presence.

It is known to both of them that Saeran fell first, as evidenced by the deacon’s impulsiveness and his inability to resist the urge to steal a kiss, though the barrier of his own hand turned it into their first indirect kiss instead. The man immediately tried to flee after committing such an act, leaving River utterly confused. Even so, River chased after him, unwilling to let it go over a single mistake while being convinced that everything stemmed from a simple misunderstanding. After all, people often mistook the young lad for an adult and he thought maybe he could resolve this issue after revealing his real age. What grown man would willingly pursue someone who had only just become legal, anyway? Little did he know that one mistake would lead to another, as River eventually found himself reciprocating Saeran’s feelings along the way.

“Weird” is the word that described River’s first impression of him. From the very beginning, he had wondered why the man seemed overly curious and as if he was trying to create close proximity and engage in affective gestures that were actually quite normal but still way too much for someone who had only come as a tourist. River also associated him with violent love language, something he somehow still found difficult to avoid despite having known him for quite some time. The young lad liked the way he could depend on Saeran, but what truly made his heart beat faster was the way he sometimes looked gentle, harmless, clumsy, and a little unsure of everything. When alone, he often pondered what else could make the deacon form a smile on his grumpy features, and every time the image flashed in his mind, a faint rosy hue appeared on his face. Things progressed further when he decided to visit Saeran in Japan two years later, spending his allotted absences and skipping classes for two weeks, and the two of them ended up getting jealous of each other on different occasions.

River isn't the type who likes to seriously use endearments, but he once thought of 天赐 (Tiāncì; gift from heaven, implying the message “you are a precious gift Heaven sent to me”), 天恩 (Tiānēn; blessings of heaven, implying the message “you came in the form of Heaven’s mercy, kindness, and benevolence”), and 天泽 (Tiānzé; grace of heaven, implying the message “through you, Heaven’s sustaining care nurtures all things”) after hearing what the already given, seemingly meaningless name truly means to the man. Nothing could compare to the original meaning, since Chinese doesn't have a concept similar to Catholic divinity, so that was the only thing he could think of. Honestly, he was unsure which of the three names to choose, so he simply combined them using the prefix 天 (Tiān; heaven), as Saeran had become a presence so holy to him.

With their current closeness, River no longer hesitates to show affection openly—however, he still has his restraints. Although he intended to become more open, at this point he was still very cautious when answering Saeran’s questions because he didn’t want Saeran to leave him the way his best friend, Allen, did.

HYMERIA VALLEY!AU

Autumn, September 2025. River was only 17 years old when he moved to Hymeria. His life changed drastically when his father became involved in a money laundering case. The family’s assets were frozen, and the small income from his part-time job wasn’t enough to cover rent and daily expenses. Eventually, River had to take on more part-time work just to make ends meet, but the financial pressure made it difficult for him to continue his studies. In the end, he decided to put his college plans on hold and move to the countryside.

Up until he decided to move from London, River was working in retail shops while attending a Further Education programme as required by law and funded by the government. By law, young people in England are required to continue their education or training until they reach the age of 18. However, a student may leave school on the last Friday of June if they will be 16 by the end of the summer vacation. After graduation, they must pursue one of the following options: full-time education (such as college), an apprenticeship, or working/volunteering for at least 20 hours a week while concurrently participating in part-time study or training. With a wage of £6.50 per hour, his monthly budget often felt too tight for him to breathe comfortably. Sometimes his landlord would offer him dinner out of pity, and other times, he would stretch a single meal to last the whole day, telling himself he wasn’t really hungry and went to sleep as soon as he touched his bed.

Life felt a little easier after he moved to the village. He got free accommodation, a job, enough income for daily meals, and a less stressful situation. And the best part of it, since he doesn’t have to worry about rent, the young lad can save more money than he did in the city and start building a better future.

Federal law states that the minimum age for most jobs is 14. At ages 16–17, young people can work unlimited hours and in most types of jobs. River had no difficulty finding work in fishing and agriculture when he first arrived, but he once slightly deceived the locals to secure a job in mining (no, technically he didn’t mention his age, his mature appearance was what misled the locals). Fortunately, River quickly turned 18, allowing him to legally do any kind of work in his third month living in Hymeria Valley. River worked hard to earn money in the village, trying to take on any job he could—whether it was fulfilling requests from the locals or gathering natural resources to consign to the owner of Jeber Mart so they could be sold in the city. Even so, he isn’t a greedy person. Early on after his arrival, he even gave away some of his hard-earned money to a few villagers for free despite not having much saved at the time*. Since he constantly feels the urge to earn money ASAP, he currently prefers to focus on upgrading his merchant card instead of spending it on a new house or other expenses.

In December 2025, about a week before his birthday, River attempted to return to his hometown in Camden with the intention of delivering Christmas gifts and greetings to his brother’s victims and their families, as well as visiting his mother’s grave. He also made a stop at his old house, only to find that the building had begun to deteriorate and that the camellia tree his mother once loved had been broken and toppled by a snowstorm. He then decided to keep a few of the broken stems to replant elsewhere. Later on, if you visit his house, you’ll see his mother’s camellia tree growing in the yard—a sign of his love for his late mother and his effort to preserve the only memory of her that remains.

*IC-wise, River likes to help, so any transactional decisions will be included for character development purposes.

SUNNY DAY

River leaves home at 5 AM and returns to the Residential Area at 7 AM after jogging along the riverside trail that runs through Bloomswood Forest and the Northern Mountain. Every day between 10 and 11 AM, he stops by the Hymeria Public Library for a quick visit to read some pages and later after that he will randomly choose to go fishing at Hymeria Dock, Waterlily Lake, or Rockhowl Waterfall if he has no appointments or tasks to take care of. Should Hymeria Dock be his destination for the day, River sometimes lingers by the beach afterward or visits La Foglia Coffee and Gelato for some delish ice cream before heading home to spend the rest of the evening gaming.

RAINY DAY

On rainy days, River skips his usual morning jog and stays inside until he heads out at 10 AM to visit the Hymeria Public Library and stays there until it closes at 6 PM. After that, he stops by the Bluebell Riverside Inn and Pub for a meal and a short chat with the locals before going back home to the Residential Area.

SPECIAL WEEK

In mid-December, about a week before his birthday, River will contact Aiden to drive him into the city to take care of some matters. One of those is visiting his mother’s grave, and another is checking on a “friend” his older brother left in his care.

RELATIONS (HYMERIA!AU):

Haellery Maynard & Laziel Aebischer.

Although they first met in Hymeria Valley, River has been friends with Haellery (Elly) and Laziel (Zizi) since he was 11 years old through a MOBA game called DOTA 2. They are two of the few people who know about his father’s money-laundering case and still treat him like an ordinary teenage boy without seeing him as someone who comes from a family of criminals. They don’t know anything about River’s older brother yet, aside from the general fact that the siblings aren’t close because of their twelve-year age gap. Yet as time draws the three of them closer in this place of nowhere, River, Elly, and Zizi slowly begin to reveal the truths hidden within each other’s secrets.

Growing up without a kind older-brother figure, River developed a fondness and a protective feeling toward Haellery, most of the time causing ruckus with Laziel because he doesn’t want to share her with anyone. What he loves most about her are her sweet treats and her personality which is just as sweet as candy. Yet he still doesn’t see her as a love interest, but rather as an older sister whom he cares for deeply. “Miss Elly” (Indonesian: Kak Elly) is one example where he uses it as a form of endearment. In contrast with Haellery (and outside family matters), the young man enjoys teasing Laziel, one of his friends for seven years, simply because his facial expressions are fascinating. He would never dare to bother someone quiet and awkward, but the blond is neither of those things. If there is one way to describe them, River loves his lazy, silly, yellow friend, the way a bully loves his victim—without the harmful aggression, of course.

His late mother called him “Livy” because he had a lisp when he was little.
His Chinese name, Jiānghǎi, literally translates to “river and ocean.” The name was given to him with hope his life will be like a river that always successfully moves forward and grows into the sea. He does not like odd numbers, except for 1 and 5, as he finds them require efforts to count. He likes the number 1 solely because he is a VERY competitive person.
River was born to parents who are both of Chinese descent. He was given a Western name because they thought it would be easier for their son to blend with Western society.
South Shields is a coastal port town located near the River Tyne that is famous for its rich maritime history and is known for its beautiful coastline and beaches, which explains River’s fondness for fishing.
If someone asks him to choose between a game console and a book, River will definitely choose a book.
His father majored in Geology. Despite that, River only developed a liking for the visual appearance of minerals. Sandstones is his first favorite because it remind him of beach sand.
Potatoes are the only vegetables he doesn't hate and sometimes he still dislikes them. He also hates honey for its weird taste and sticky texture, and he hates squid and octopus because he finds them scary.
He once took the Hogwarts online test. The result showed that he was sorted into Hufflepuff, had a unicorn Patronus, and received a redwood wand with a unicorn hair core, 14½ inches in length and hard flexibility.
River can sing, but he’s too shy to show it off. He can also play the piano and a little bit of guitar. When he was younger, there was an inside family joke about him being the “unwanted child” since his mother’s second pregnancy was unexpected and he was born twelve years after his older brother.
Tabby (Indonesian: Mujair) is a stray cat that he met and often feeds. If he had the chance to adopt one, he might name it Parkin (after his grandmother’s gingerbread cake). Parkin is also the name of every cat he adopts in-game.
In the Hymeria!AU, there was a Christmas event where villagers had to decorate a sock and fill it with a piece of paper listing three wishes. His wishes were: (1) “May the two people I cherish most, Laziel and Haellery, always be happy,” (2) “May my longing greetings reach Mother in heaven,” and (3) “Parkin. Darn, I’m missing Granny’s gingerbread cake.”

First of all, I would like to express my sincere thanks for taking the time to read River’s biography. This character was originally created so I can participate in the HE14 event. However, due to my impulsiveness, the character “River Yang” was later reworked into a W-OC with various adjustments.

For those of you who have known River since HE14, you’re welcome to greet River just as you did during the event. However, since I am currently focusing on developing River’s story using the W-OC (original) setting and Hymeria Valley!AU, there will be a few adjustments—such as keeping our interactions vague (e.g., not specifically referring to the magic school, past lessons, duels, comical moments, or the use of spells) and treating it more like multiverse interactions (apologies, as I can’t run every verse simultaneously due to agency rules).

I usually do things spontaneously and don’t really plan personal storylines for the Hogwarts!AU version, so please let me know in advance if you would like to develop stories using the Hogwarts!AU setting for future events. Additionally, I am not currently accepting pre-discussed Hogwarts!AU romance storylines, as they require a chemistry test and I can’t guarantee my reply pace. I will do my best on my end—feel free to try your luck spontaneously while understanding the risks, and please remember that each developing storyline only affects its specific AU (unless you choose to include your character across all universes by providing a clear and logical 5W+1H explanation/idea suggestion, with or without the written biography).

All interactions will automatically be set to the original verse, except if you choose to be involved in other AUs (in this case, for now we only have Hogwarts!AU that runs during the event period and Hymeria!AU that runs simultaneously with the original one as a second primary life). To put the comparison in a single word, the original verse is much more “problematic” (filled with a lot of unsolved problems with little to no solution) and the AU ones are more “healing” (maybe also a found-family theme). If our characters have interacted in any verse, I will continue using that specific setting unless requested otherwise (e.g. I will not switch River’s setting to a university student with a wealthy family background when interacting with characters who first met him in Hymeria!AU).
Feel free to ask me to try writing an exploratory (one-time, oftenly prompt-based) plot together; however, please note that it will not be recorded in the storyline and won’t affect our character’s interaction outside that plot.
Different Account, Different Story (DADS). Please keep in mind that I, the writer behind this account, am a separate entity and interacting with my character does not mean you will have a specific bond with me. Please be professional and distinguish between “River” the writer and “River” the character. That said, I will not have more than one partner within a single account (River in other AU versions will remain unpartnered) to avoid any perception of favoritism.
Single ship (TnC applies) and ship with chemistry. As usual, I won’t be actively seeking new relations due to my lack of energy. But if you’re curious (and aware of the risks), feel free to scroll down a little bit more—I’ve put River’s possible relations below (original verse). I prefer something spontaneous and flexible (so we don’t have to depend on our activity on each other), although feel free to suggest anything outside of what’s listed. Relations from whichever verse will be kept until we mutually decide to break it (yes, totally super cool with a super “loyo” relation).
Despite my “loyoness,” I consider myself quite a friendly writer. We can use DMs to talk about things outside our plot, like writing, games, and other fun activities. However, as this note is added, please DO NOT bring any kind of drama or sensitive real-life topics into my DMs. I don’t want to read about who is who and what was done. Heavy conversations (outside the writing context) tend to affect my energy to draft replies and it holds me back from finishing my reply queue because I feel uneasy not responding to those kinds of messages on my RP account. Please also don’t spam me with any kind of messages (except a reminder to continue our plot) … please, respect my personal space. (NANGIS.)

EVENT/AGENCY FRIENDS SPECIFIC GUIDE:

You can godmod to an extent while writing event/monthly tasks with me. Examples of allowed godmodding include: having your character and River do an instruction step together, having them walk together and skip time to reach the intended location, or concluding that both characters have finished their tasks (especially when we are running out of time) and walking them home (it would be appreciated if you could inform me first). Please DO NOT godmod my character’s dialogue or specific personal reactions WITHOUT permission. Also, if a third or fourth member is inactive or unresponsive please inform any godmodding you plan to do in our GDM, not just through personal chat with me. Basic etiquette. The writing team does not consist of just you and me.
For now, I only allow non-consensual practices in HE settings for fun, comedic moments (well, sometimes it’s fun lol). Even so, please don’t turn it into negative bullying toward anyone or defend the behavior by saying, “it’s your fault for not understanding the joke.” And, I understand that sometimes we can get carried away, so let’s kindly remind each other.
