How VFX Artists of "Stranger Things" Updated the Demogorgon for 2022 Audiences
Introduction
Stranger Things Season 4 has been available on Netflixsince May 27, 2022. There was a big effort to ensure that the show's special visualizations mirrored everything that they can manage with the most recent innovation.
The Demogorgon from Stranger Things is a terrifying monster that haunts the kids in Hawkins, Indiana. It's also one of the most well-known monsters on Netflix. But how did they bring this creature to life? We've got some answers for you.

Demogorgon More Photo-real.
The VFX artists worked to make the Demogorgon more photo-real.

- They were tasked with making it look more like a real animal, and less like a cartoon-style monster. They also made sure that it didn't look too much like any other creature out there that way, viewers could tell they were watching something different from anything else they had seen before.
- They had to figure out where the eyes were. The eyes are on the head, but it's hard to see. We had to figure out where the eyes were and how they moved. They used a lot of reference material.
- To create the Demogorgon, the VFX team used reference material from real-life animals, other movies and shows, as well as their imagination. This is a common practice when creating new monsters for movies and TV shows. They study what makes an animal or creature look like it could exist on Earth today. For example, they might take an ostrich feather and replicate it using Computer Graphics Software (CG). Or they might look at how wild dogs move in nature and use that information to create an animation of their movements in CG form.
- They also drew inspiration from real-life animals for the Demogorgon's movements.
"The Demogorgon had this way of moving that was very unique and specific, so we wanted to make sure it felt like the original Demogorgon," said VFX artist Matthew Perri."We looked at reference material from nature, from the original creature, and from actors who've played the monster."
Perri also took inspiration from the director, Matt Duffer. "He has an affinity for things that are scary," he said. "He's a big fan of horror movies and sci-fi."
- The original Demogorgon is different from the new one.
- The new Demogorgon is more detailed, photorealistic, and colorful. It has a more muscular build than the original version.
- The eyes are also different they have more detail in them than they did in the original show.

The new Demogorgon's design incorporates its background in Upside Down. The Demogorgon's new appearance is more gross, slimy, and scary than its original counterpart. It also has a lot more detail to it it's not just a giant floating eyeball anymore.
The new creature has been given an updated look that reflects its surroundings a greenish blue skin color with eyes that glow red when disturbed by people looking at it; dripping mucus from its nose; long tentacles reaching out from around its mouth (which opens up like an upside-down umbrella). It also features more realistic hair growth patterns on top of his head (not so much "spikey" spikes as before) along with several other minor details such as cracks in the rock face behind him where he can be seen moving between shots."
- There are many differences between the original and new Demogorgon, but they're both cool monsters.
The new version of the Demogorgon is a lot more photo-real than its original incarnation.
