27 years ago, Richard Blank left Philadelphia on a journey that brought him to Costa Rica where he now owns a successful business and the largest collection of pinball machines in the country. It's a great story, and a terrific podcast that I know you will enjoy.
Dr. Brian King trained as a neuroscientist and psychologist and for the past decade has traveled the world as a comedian and public speaker. By day he conducts seminars, presented nationwide and attended by thousands of people each year, on positive psychology, the health benefits of humor, and stress management.
By night he practices what he teaches in comedy clubs. Dr. Brian began performing stand-up comedy in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2009, and has performed hundreds of shows around the world. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas, a master's degree from the University of New Orleans, and a Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University, and is the author of The Art of Taking It Easy and The Laughing Cure. Dr. Brian hails from New York City and today spends his life on the road, traveling regularly with his partner, Sarah, and their young daughter.
Business Ethics in a Strict Catholic Country
But doctor, I'll tell you five campaigns I don't do. We don't work with sportsbooks, casinos, stocks, pharmacies, or sweet steaks. It's my standards. There's plenty of ways to make money out there. And I have nothing against it. I like gambling saloons. Yeah, it's cool.
But I am in a strict Catholic country. And I want to make sure that when someone goes home, they can tell their parents what they do for a living. And you've heard the stories. And that's what gives call centers and telemarketers a bad rap. for these scams that they do.
Leadership Philosophy: Motivating a Team Without Paddling
And the only thing that I didn't understand was how to do the paperwork and how to pay the bills. But I knew the people. If I could keep them motivated and focused and increasing their ability to be more self-reliant, being better speakers and advanced vocabulary, then maybe I was doing my job. And it seemed to work.
It was no resistance. It was like gravity or wind or even some current in the water. I don't have to paddle. I could sit back in a tube, me and you, just chilling. And so when life became easier, maybe became smarter because I didn't have to work as hard. And so you don't become a CEO of a call center. You don't go to school for it. Most people would say not to sell your soul, but it's very lucrative.

Realities of Balancing a Music Career and Day Job
And they say, you know, people come to the shows, they'll put their 20 bucks down and they'll buy me a drink. But how many produce a song? How many watch should pay for the London Room? Or the Hard Rock Cafe? And maybe between me and you, Doc, it allowed me to... get to enjoy the rock and roll lifestyle for a little bit, ride with them in the limo, get to be there while they're producing the song and see what that's like. And so I don't want that as a, it's something I don't think, it's such a trade off, because they have to earn a living, they got to get jobs, but then they never have time to practice with each other or they're strung out, they're too tired, they can't play a gig and it's just, they're torn. They're torn. They wish they could do it all day every day, but they have these other lives doing IT or telemarketing calls. And so I got to see the non-glamorous side of it that nobody ever gets to see. Yeah, that's pretty cool.
Richard’s journey in the call center space is filled with twists and turns. When he was 27 years old, he relocated to Costa Rica to train employees for one of the larger call centers in San Jose.
Mr. Richard Blank holds a bachelors degree in Communication and Spanish from the University of Arizona and a certificate of language proficiency from the University of Sevilla, Spain. A Keynote speaker for Philadelphia's Abington High School 68th National Honors Society induction ceremony. In addition, inducted into the 2023 Hall of Fame for Business. Giving back to Abington Senior High School is very important to Mr. Blank. As such, he endows a scholarship each year for students that plan on majoring in a world language at the university level.
