UK Alarm bells have been set off only recently with the growth of AI being touted as a means to hire fewer entry-level graduates. The Institute for Public Policy Research said nearly 8 million jobs in the UK could be lost to AI, leading to a "jobs apocalypse."

In the three months to September 2025, the UK worker population was 34.19 million people aged 16 and over, with an employment rate of 75.0% for those aged 16 to 64.

 

8÷34.19 = 23.39% AI unemployment.

 

The UK stock market hit a one-month low today amid concerns of an AI bubble that could spark another global recession. Shares tumbled amid concerns the bubble could burst with markets in the US going haywire over a mixed jobs market in the country.

 

UK unemployment surged to a peak of approximately 23% during the Great Depression in January 1933, doubling in just a few years and causing immense hardship, especially in industrial areas like the Northeast, Scotland, and Wales. While the overall economic impact on Britain was less severe than in the US, persistent high unemployment and poverty were defining features, leading to protests and government austerity measures like the 1931 May Report and the introduction of the harsh Means Test.
