510(k) submission

A 510(k) submission is a premarket filing to the FDA demonstrating that a medical device is substantially equivalent to a legally marketed predicate device. It includes detailed information on device design, intended use, technological characteristics, performance testing, and labeling. The goal is to show that the new device does not raise new questions of safety or effectiveness compared to the predicate. Manufacturers typically submit bench, biocompatibility, sterilization, and sometimes clinical data to support their claims. Once accepted, the FDA reviews the submission and issues a clearance letter if substantial equivalence is established.
