His recent performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where he amassed 218 runs at an impressive average of 54.50, including a century against Pakistan, fueled speculation about a potential retirement announcement. Speaking at the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit powered by Leaders, Kohli revealed his current mindset. "Today, I am not playing for achievements. It pretty much comes down to the pure joy of playing," he stated. "As long as that feeling is intact, I will continue playing. I have to be honest about that with myself."
He also shared a valuable piece of advice from former coach Rahul Dravid: "He said one always has to stay in touch with oneself to figure out where one is placed in life."
And then, with a clear and direct message, Kohli put the retirement rumors to rest: "Don’t get nervous; I am not making any announcements. As of now, everything seems fine."
