John Mateyko: A Life Rooted in Creativity, Community, and Adventure
Nestled in the scenic and rustic enclave of Serenbe, Georgia—featured nationally on the Today Show—John Mateyko finds inspiration in the beauty of nature and the vibrancy of artistic living. This website offers a window into John’s creative world and three of his most cherished passions: collecting watches, photography, and embracing the outdoors.
Championing Community and the Arts
A dedicated community builder, John founded the Serenbe Athletic Association in 2021. He currently serves as both Commissioner and announcer for its co-ed leagues, featuring Chicago-style Softball and Kickball. His commitment to local culture also shines through his theatrical work. As a producer with Center Stage at Serenbe, John has helped raise over $450,000 for Terra Academy. His productions include The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge (2021), It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play (2023 and 2025), Die Hard: Once Upon a Time at Nakatomi Plaza (2024), with Mamma Mia now in preproduction.
John’s artistic contributions also extend to film, having worked as Christian Bale’s stand-in on major Hollywood productions like Batman Begins (2005) and Public Enemies (2009).
The Art of Functional Timepieces
John’s watch collection is a tribute to the elegance of functionality. At its core are classic Casio G-Shock models—especially the square-faced icons known for their ruggedness and timeless design. He is equally drawn to vintage-inspired dive watches that honor horological tradition while ensuring contemporary reliability.
He holds a particular appreciation for the Seiko family—from the accessible charm of Seiko everyday models to the refined luxury of Grand Seiko and the artistic brilliance of Credor. Yet, it’s the modest, reliable everyday wearers that speak to John the most—those “do anything, go anywhere” timepieces that prioritize substance over show.
His watch-collecting philosophy is refreshingly simple: “The more boring, the better.” It’s a reflection of his broader worldview—valuing purpose over pretense, subtlety over flash, and craftsmanship in everyday essentials.
A Life of Love and Exploration
A family man at heart, John proposed to his wife Slavyana at Germany’s fairytale-like Neuschwanstein Castle. Their story continued with a honeymoon on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, followed by a baby-moon in Rome and Lake Como. Today, their son Sasha spends his summers at the TASIS camp in Lugano, Switzerland.
John’s passion for photography allows him to capture life’s details—from striking architectural elements to sweeping landscapes. His love for the natural world has led to global adventures, including scuba diving in the Philippines, Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica, Italy, Portugal, and even alongside whale sharks at the Georgia Aquarium. On land, he’s raced to victory in the Midwinters San Francisco Bay sailing race and biked down the slopes of Haleakala volcano in Maui.

John Mateyko’s zest for life, creative spirit, and commitment to community are deeply intertwined with the unique charm of Serenbe. Surrounded by nature and nurtured by art, his life is a celebration of thoughtful living, meaningful pursuits, and the beauty found in both the everyday and the extraordinary.
