Identification is a process that occurs on a daily basis, and what is at stake, is the psychological alignment of one object/consciousness, with another object/consciousness. Thus, identification is like a kind of plastic imitation of another object/consciousness with the desire/intention to melt it and identify with it. In this way, one replaces one's essence with the essence of another person/object.
The reason for this lies in dissatisfaction with the contents of one's consciousness and the given life circumstances that cannot be changed and rejected, or one does not know how to do so. Unable to change them, one identifies with someone who has most of the traits/circumstances one desires. Therefore, identification is a frequent psychological process, because it is difficult to find a person who would be completely satisfied with himself. Thus, it is desirable to better understand the essence of identification.
We have said that most people are unhappy with themselves and their life circumstances to some degree. But since the changes that these circumstances require are beyond her ability, in an attempt to ease the pain caused by this, her Ego identifies with a person (or several of them) who possess the desired qualities/circumstances. Most often these are famous and rich movie, music and sports stars, since they combine most of the desired traits/circumstances: wealth, success, fame, fans and therefore a kind of apparent immortality. For many of us, what could a person want more, right?
But like most things, identification is not entirely harmless, it is not harmless in a psychological sense, because with it you are pushing your consciousness outside yourself, trying to become something or someone else. This psychological game should not cause harm in the short term, but in the long term it will certainly be beneficial.
You are who you are, and no matter how much you dislike this fact, you must fully accept it, because this is the first step to change, and until you accept yourself as you are, you will not be able to change for the better. In this case, you will still remain in the fog of fantasies that the identification allows you. That is why you need to stop this as soon as possible, say, right at the moment when you read these lines: Stop Identifying Yourself With What You Are Not. Stop living a combination of lies and self-deception. Stop dreaming about fame and fortune that are already waiting for you around the corner tomorrow, because you yourself know that they will not come true. Stop deceiving yourself using identification, because this is not you.
You are where the pain is. Where you are in pain, you are stuck and forgotten not only by others, but also by yourself. Your pain is an alarm signal that tells you what is wrong with you. Where it hurts, there is a problem. So embrace that pain, because with it you will also embrace yourself. It is a difficult but necessary path to remembrance, because the pain inside you also captures a part of you. To bring it back and connect it to your being, you must accept and let through yourself and the pain that is associated with this part of your consciousness. It will hurt, of course, but it will cause you even more pain and suffering, wandering from shame to adversity, identifying with a glamorous and often false life, richer and more successful than you.
Embrace the pain you feel, in order to embrace yourself along with it. If it hurts, so be it, don’t be shy about crying. If you feel sad and unhappy, express that too. Whatever comes from negative emotions in your area of consciousness, let it come out. Be like a movie screen projecting the movies of your past. Don’t judge them or evaluate them, just let them come out. In this way, you will empty the accumulated stores of negative energy and stop identifying yourself with other people. When you feel that you have cleared yourself of pain, you will understand that only then you will have the opportunity to bring your life into alignment with your inner being.
