Archaeologists and historians still do not know what the fish-shaped heads of Lepenski Vir, carved in large pieces of rock, represented. They assume that it is a depiction of a river god, because they lived on the Danube, engaged in fishing. In those ancient Mesolithic times from 11,000-5,000 years ago, the animal world was diverse, and people were few, so hunting on land was uncertain and dangerous because of packs of carnivores, such as wolves, families of bears and the like, and they did not have "long-range" weapons: bows and arrows. Therefore, fishing was the basis of their survival.

Well, there are several species of fish in the Danube, but in those ancient times, one species ensured the survival of the entire population of Lepenski Vir: it was the sturgeon.

Sturgeon are not ordinary "fish", but river giants that grow to a length of 5 meters and a weight of 1,000 kilograms. They sailed into the Danube from the Black Sea (or before its formation, lakes), attracted by the gravelly bottom to which they attached their eggs, as well as whirlpools, because their rotation provides a greater amount of oxygen in the water, compared to the calm Danube water. For this reason, people of that time chose the whirlpool on the Danube near the location of Lepena as their habitat.

The strongest representatives of the tribe - fishermen and hunters, would sail on rafts to the whirlpool where the sturgeons gathered, throw the remains of food to them on the surface of the water, and when the sturgeons surfaced to pick them up, they would hit them on the head with heavy stone mallets with long handles and thus hold them stunned against the rafts, while the whirlpool would rotate them back to the shore from which they had set off, where the other members of the Lepenski Vir were waiting.

Thanks to the great weight of the sturgeons, which in that distant past were probably over 5 meters long and weighed over 1000 kilograms, they had enough food, and they expressed their gratitude by carving their characteristic eyes and mouths into oval-shaped rocks.

Археолози и историчари и даље не знају шта су представљале риболике главе Лепенског Вира, исклесане у облим комадима стена, претпостављају да је то приказ речног бога, јер су живели на Дунаву, бавећи се риболовом, У та давна времена мезолита од пре 11.000-5.000 година, животињски свет био је многовројан, а људи малобројни, те је лов на копну био неизвестан и опасан због чопора месождера, рецимо вукова, породица медведа и сличних, а да притом они нису располагали "далекометним" оружјем: луковима и стрелама. Стога, риболов им је представљао основу преживљавања.

Елем, у Дунаву има више врста риба, но у она давна времена једна врста обезбеђивала је опстанак читаве популације Лепенског Вира: била је то јесетра.

Јесетре нису обичне "рибе", него су то речни дивови који нарасту до дужине од 5 метара и тежине од 1.000 килограма, из Црног мора (или пре његовог настанка, језера) упловљавале су у Дунав, привлачио их је шљунковито дно за које су лепиле икру, такође и вирови, јер својим окретањем обезбеђују у води већу количину кисеоника, у односу на мирну дунавску воду. Из тог разлога, људи тог доба, вир на Дунаву код локације Лепена, изабрали су као своје станиште.

Најачи представници племена - рибари и ловци, испловљавали би на сплавовима до вира где су се јесетре окупљале, бацали им остатке хране на површину воде, и када би јесетре изрониле на површину да их покупе, тешким каменим батовима са дугачком дршком, ударали би их у главу и тако омамљене придржавали уз сплавове, док би их вир својом ротацијом вратио на обалу са које су се отиснули, где су чекали остали припадници Лепенског Вира.

Захваљујући великој тежини јесетра, које су у тој давној прошлости вероватно биле дуже од 5 метара и теже од 1000 килограма, имали су довољно хране, те су своју захвалност изражавали клешући њихов карактеристичан изглед очију и уста, у стенама овалног облика.
