A captain who commits three over-rate offenses in a season is no longer subject to a one-match penalty under the IPL. Such offenses will only result in a fine and in-game field restrictions starting in the 2025 Indian Premier League. Any penalties put in place before to the 2025 season, nevertheless, would need to be fulfilled.

As a result, Hardik Pandya will not be absent from the Mumbai Indians' season-opening match against the Chennai Super Kings on March 23.

As an alternative, the IPL governing council has implemented a demerit point system to align the IPL code of conduct with the ICC code of conduct. The match referee will deduct points for any penalties he or she imposes. One demerit point will be awarded, for instance, for a fine equal to 25% of the match cost. Both players and team officials will be able to use these, and the points will be accrued and recorded for a period of 36 months. The aforementioned player or team official may be suspended after accruing a significant number of demerit points.

Any sanctions imposed for Level 2 or Level 3 offenses may be appealed to the BCCI Ombudsman by a player, team official, or franchise. Only after paying an appeal cost of INR 90 lakh (about USD 104,000), which will only be reimbursed if the case is fully successful before the ombudsman, will they be permitted to file an appeal.

Demerit points will not be awarded for fines imposed prior to the 2025 season.
