Are you pursuing a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBG) in Ireland? Achieving Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI) in OBG is a significant milestone. To obtain this qualification, candidates must pass two key exams: the MRCPI OBG Part 2 Written and the MRCPI OBG Part 2 OSCE.

This guide covers the eligibility requirements and key details for both exams, helping you understand the steps needed to succeed.

Eligibility Criteria for MRCPI OBG Part 2 Written Exam

To sit for the MRCPI OBG Part 2 Written Exam, candidates must meet one of the following qualifications:

  • MRCOG Part 1 (Exemption from MRCOG Part 1 is NOT accepted)
  • RCPI Professional Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Awarded from 2022 onwards)
  • MRCPI Part 1 in General Medicine or Paediatrics (Achieved within the last six years)

  • At least nine months in obstetrics and nine months in gynaecology (or a combination of both).
  • Training in RCPI-recognised institutions, accredited by the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists at RCPI.
  • A minimum of six months per training position.
  • Completion of training by January for the March exam or August for the September exam.

  • Successfully pass the MRCPI OBG Part 2 Written Exam.
  • Attempt the OSCE within three years of passing the Part 2 Written Exam.
  • Not exceed six attempts at the OSCE exam.
