“Let’s Name It Destiny” - Mohit Sharma Recalls Gujarat Titans’ Heartbreaking Loss To CSK In IPL 2023

The echoes of the IPL 2023 final still resonate, a bittersweet symphony of triumph and despair. Mohit Sharma, the Gujarat Titans' pace spearhead, recently opened up about the agonizing loss to Chennai Super Kings, revealing the team's emotional response and the coaching staff's poignant words.

The stage was set for an epic clash: the defending champions, Gujarat Titans, against the seasoned veterans, Chennai Super Kings. A high-scoring thriller saw the Titans post a formidable 214, powered by Sai Sudharsan's near-century. Then, the heavens opened, transforming the match into a rain-affected drama.

With a revised target of 171 in 15 overs, CSK fought tooth and nail, their hopes flickering with every wicket. The tension reached its peak in the final over, with Mohit Sharma, who had enjoyed a phenomenal comeback season, tasked with defending 10 runs off the last two balls.

Despite delivering four near-perfect deliveries, conceding only three runs, Ravindra Jadeja's brilliance prevailed, smashing a six and a four to snatch victory from the Titans' grasp. The heartbreak was palpable.

A Moment of Reflection: Accepting Fate

Recently acquired by Delhi Capitals, Mohit Sharma revisited that fateful over in an interview with News18. He revealed the team's collective response, a blend of acceptance and resilience. "What happened in talks with Hardik, Ashish Nehra, Vikram Solanki, and all the players of the team. Everyone said that it was not in our destiny," he recounted. "If we play 100 out of 100, then maybe we will win 95 times and lose only 5 times. So the scenario of losing 5 times, let’s name it destiny and cut the bill, because why get so worried?"

He emphasized the unwavering support he received from his teammates and coaches. "So I do whatever is in my hands. First of all, everyone said very good things. No one said that one person does not make you lose a game, and one person does not alone win you a game. It’s a team game, right? So if anyone comes and blames you that you put the balls wrong, then maybe I would have shown him how my whole season went."

The veteran pacer's words reflect the raw emotion of defeat, tempered with the understanding that sometimes, even the best laid plans succumb to the unpredictable nature of sport.

As Mohit Sharma prepares to don the Delhi Capitals jersey for IPL 2025, the memory of that final over will undoubtedly fuel his determination. His journey with the Capitals begins on March 24th against Lucknow SuperGiants, where he'll look to write a new chapter, leaving the echoes of the past behind.
