6 Tips for Painting Old Furniture

Furniture in wooden house design such as dining tables, guest tables, patio chairs, and so on usually last quite a long time. However, the look of the same furniture sometimes makes the room look boring.

The problem is buying new furniture, of course, requires a lot of funds. About that, don't worry, decorating a room doesn't always have to replace old furniture with new ones.

We can, really, make the room decoration look more different than before without spending a lot of money. You do this by updating existing furniture by repainting it. Easy and practical!

Release Some Items

If you want to fasten furniture such as chairs or cabinet interiors, first remove some items such as seat cushions, or handles, screws and so on. This is done to simplify the painting process so that the paint can reach all the parts that should be painted later.

Sanding Furniture

Before the painting process, must go through the sanding process first. Use fine sandpaper to scrub the surface of the furniture to avoid tearing the wood finish.

Sanding is done to remove stuck stains. The sanding process is also needed so that the new paint can stick well to the surface of the furniture. After sanding, wipe all surfaces with a clean cloth.

Apply Base Paint

Apply primer to the entire surface of the furniture. You can use a primer with an HG (high gloss) thinner. Usually, primers with HG thinner hold up better in all weathers.

To paint you can use a brush or spray primer. After that, cover the imperfections and let dry for an hour. Once dry, sand again using a little water.

Furniture Paint

After applying the base coat, just paint with furniture paint for finishing. Choose a paint color that matches the taste or theme of the room.

You can use white for a shabby chic style or bright colors for pop art or bohemian styles.

Furniture that can be renewed by painting is generally made of wood. So, choose a special wood paint. Before painting, stir the paint clockwise and vice versa. Then add water about 10% of the amount of paint. Stir 3-5 minutes.

Use a foam brush to make it neater, leaving no fibers, threads, nylon, or plastic. Painting must be done in the direction of the wood grain so that the painting results are neater.

Drying Process

Avoid drying directly under the hot sun because it can cause air bubbles due to the expansion of the wood material, thus pushing the paint layer that is not perfect. It is enough to dry in a ventilated room so that there is still air circulation from outside.

Creative Ideas Tips:

Before repainting, you should look for a model reference first. Look for furniture paint colors that are trending and should be adjusted to the theme of the room you want to create.
If you repaint the chair furniture, you can also replace the seat cushion with a more up-to-date motif and adjust it with new paint so that it adds to the beautiful appearance.
