PROLOGUE:

“Mommy!” Taraj came scampering over to me, the tip of his tail bobbing behind him. My gaze warmed to see him cuddle up next to me. The dry soil cracked beneath my sore paws. I had been managing an entire clowder, while having to make sure my son was okay.

He doesn’t deserve to live here. I thought. We lived in the harshest and driest conditions known to cat. It got freakishly hot and every sip of water was a miracle. Taraj never got to witness rich soil, plants, or streams.

“Amari.” Askari  lifted his chin, “Two foreigners would like a word.” I hesitated, but decided to speak with them. Whatever they needed, they probably wouldn’t find here. We were low on any resources.

“Taraj, listen to Havana.” I ordered him. He smiled widely and toddled over to the beautiful dame. It was a shame she was infertile.

I raised my head, preparing to meet the cats. I puffed out my chest and ruffled my fur to make me look stronger and intimidating. Most toms that had fallen in love with me said I matched within those categories. Askari walked in front of me, he was often my bodyguard.

Chilling wind ruffled my fur, it was getting colder. A reminder of the night ahead. While Center-Sun was scorching hot, Moon-Flight got freezing. I followed the black tip of Askari’s tail, and he moved to the side to reveal an interesting pair.

I was shocked to see domesticated cats, but they didn’t look like they belonged in a trekker den. I had seen kits like this before, but never full grown cats. There was a dark ginger she-cat, and a tall tabby black tom with a white underbelly, he met my height even being a domesticated cat.

“Who are you and what do you want?” I snarled, I made sure to show my razor sharp teeth.

“Shh, no need for that.” The ginger she-cat rested a paw on my shoulder that I instantly pushed off bitterly. The ginger looked slightly malicious. Never trust a ginger…

“Just tell me what you want.” I narrowed my eyes.

“Have you happened to see a pair of apprentices?” She continued.

“I’m sorry— what the hell are apprentices?!?”

“Younger cats, but older than a kit.” The ginger she-cat looked annoyed. My eyebrow raised.

“I haven’t.” I got up and started to turn around.

“Woah! I wasn’t done talking.” She hissed. Both her and the other Tom exchanged glances. She licked her paw pad once and groomed an unplaced patch of fur on her underbelly and then faced me. “If you haven’t seen them yet, that means we’re early.” The black and white tom spoke, he looked like he could probably throw the smaller cat a few cougar lengths. He had  a scar scattered body and a wide jawline. “We need you to find them and kill them.”

I snickered, “I’m flattered that you know of my ability to capture cats, but why do you want them killed? Young cats can’t do anything.” That was right, young cats were worthless. I don’t know why I kept Taraj, but I could never leave him. Some stupid feeling tied him to me.

“Not these ones.” The ginger she-cat meowed and paused for a moment, a moment that left me suspicious..

“Look, we know of something, something that could bring back a legend. But in order for that, we need those two apprentices killed. They’re a threat to our plan.”

“I’m not doing that. There’s nothing in it for me.” I snarled, why would they kill young cats? Were they going to do that to my kit?!? “If you’re willing to cut an innocent soul’s life off so early for your personal gain, then there’s something wrong with you. I’m out of this.”

“But if you help us, you could join us somewhere beautiful. Somewhere where your little  son can be truly happy.” She looked me in the eye, a sharp green gaze.

“But he is happy. He’s happy with me.” I growled defensively, and my claws unsheathed out of my control.

“Really?” She blinked, “even you know that he wishes he had a different life.”

“You’re lying!” I hissed, but my voice had a small shake to it.

Oh Taraj, why can’t I give you the life I never had?

“If you kill the cats for us, us three could rule the world.” She meowed.

I took a big breath, and nodded with determination glimmering in my eyes. “I will kill them.”

“Good.” The black and white tom grinned, “We’ve been looking forward to having a Savannah Cat on our side, Amari.”

My eyes widened to her knowing my name, “How do you know who I am?”

“We’ve been watching your clowder. You’re a strong and powerful leader.” The cunning she-cat meows while whisking a twig out of her thick tail.

“Well? Who are you?”

“I’m ScorchFire,” The ginger she-cat introduced herself, “And that cat over there is Jet. Let’s talk about the plan, and I’ll introduce you to our secret.”
