The Obligation of the Sunnah

//1//

 ادلة وجوب اتباع السنة

The Importance of the Prophetic Sunnah:

  • Essential for Understanding Islam: Islam cannot be fully and correctly understood without the Prophetic Sunnah.

  • Clarification and Detailing of Rulings: The Sunnah clarifies the details of rulings not mentioned in the Holy Quran (such as the specifics of Prayer, Zakat, and Hajj).

  • Practical Application of the Quran: The Sunnah is the practical application of the Quran's commands and a living embodiment of its teachings.

  • An Independent Source of Legislation: The event of changing the Qibla (direction of prayer) is evidence that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) legislated by divine revelation.

  • The Sunnah Explains What God Intended in the Quran: The Sunnah reveals the meanings intended in the Holy Quran and clarifies what may be general or ambiguous.

  • //2//

Secondly: The Authority (Hujjiyyah) of the Prophetic Sunnah:

  • Quranic Commands to Obey the Messenger: The Quran commands obedience to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and makes obeying him equivalent to obeying God.

  • The Messenger is a Clarifier and Implementer: The Messenger is not just a deliverer of the message, but also a clarifier, implementer of the religion, a purifier, and a teacher.

  • The Sunnah is a Clarification of the Quran: The Sunnah is the Prophetic clarification of the Quranic message and the practical application of the verses. It is a Quranic necessity, not an addition to the Holy Quran.

  • No Substitute for the Sunnah: The Sunnah is essential for understanding Islam, and no other source can replace it.

Thirdly: Refuting Those Who Reject the Sunnah:

  • Rejecting the Sunnah is a Modern Innovation: Rejecting the Sunnah was not known in the early centuries of Islam; rather, it is a modern innovation.

  • //3//
  • Contradicting the Quran: Rejecting the Sunnah necessitates contradicting the Quran itself and even accusing it of being flawed.

  • Believing the Quran is Sufficient is a False Understanding: Believing that the Quran alone is sufficient is a false understanding of the religion and a disregard for God's commands to obey the Messenger.

  • Doubting the Sunnah Leads to Doubting the Quran: The Sunnah is what preserved and interpreted the Quran for us, and doubting it leads to doubting the Holy Quran itself.

Fourthly: The Quran and Sunnah are an Inseparable Unity:

  • The Quran is the Constitution and the Sunnah is the Law: The Quran is the general constitution, and the Sunnah is the law that details and applies this constitution.

  • The Sunnah Protects the Quran: The Sunnah protects the Quran from distortion and misinterpretation and clarifies the rules of contemplation within it.

  • //4//

In short, the Prophetic Sunnah is essential for understanding and applying Islam. It is a revelation from God, and Muslims must adhere to it and act upon it.

====

  • The Quran and Sunnah as a Unity: The Quran is the constitution, and the Sunnah is the law that elaborates on and implements the constitution.

  • Warning Against Disobeying the Prophet's Command: In Surah Al-Nur (24:63), Allah warns that those who disobey the Prophet expose themselves to trials in this world and punishment in the Hereafter.

  • The Obligation of Absolute Obedience to the Messenger: Emphasis is placed on the necessity of absolute obedience to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), as obeying him is equivalent to obeying Allah.
