Dabbing Disasters: 7 Mistakes You’re Probably Making (and How to Fix Them)

A dab rig can be scary. You must use a blowtorch and handle concentrates that can be of different consistencies.
If you're struggling with it, fear not. We've got your back. Here are the most typical dabbing problems, and how to resolve them.

Why Is My Dab Rig Not Hitting?

Let's start with one of the most common problems dabbers experience; your rig simply won't hit!

The most likely reason a dab rig won't hit is because it's a cheap dab rig. Not all dab rigs are made the same way, so if you cut corners on your rig it may not be functional.

That being said, a dab rig does not have to be ridiculously priced to work.

You may also want to look into getting a carb cap if you do not already have one. A carb cap allows you to manage your dab's airflow.

It allows you to have much more control over how you're hitting your dab rig. It also allows you to control the temperature of the nail or banger. This allows you to take lower-temperature dabs.

Talking about low temperatures, if your rig is straight up not hitting, the nail may not be hot enough.
If you allow it to cool down for too long, or simply don't heat it up enough in the first place, it can lead to the hit not occurring.

These are the primary reasons a dab rig will not hit. That being said, there is a string of dabbing errors that can destroy your dabbing session.

7 Common Dabbing Mistakes to Avoid

Just because you can get a hit out of your dab rig doesn't mean that it's a good hit. Here are some of the mistakes people make that affect the quality of their dab session:

1. Taking Too Big of Hits

This won't hurt your rig's hit potential, but it will cause a dab sesh to go bad quickly. Too large of a dab hit can be uncomfortably painful. If you're new to dab hits, you'll want to go slow.

As the name implies, cannabis concentrates are concentrated. Things like wax, oil, and shatter contain significantly higher THC content than cannabis flower.

The vapor tends to be hotter than the smoke from a bong hit. Many first-time dabbers hit the rig the same way they'd hit their bong. They end up coughing way too much and way too high.

Take baby hits from your dab rig until you're used to it.

2. Heating the Nail for Too Long

Nail temperature is the most finicky part of dabbing. If it's too cold, you can't hit it. If it's too hot, your hash will combust and lose flavor and potency.

The ideal dab temperature is 160–230°C (315–450°F). The best way to achieve this is using an electronic dabbing nail for precision heating.

Still, most dabbing enthusiasts love using a blowtorch. It takes most rigs about 30 seconds to reach red hot, and another 40 seconds or so to cool to the perfect temperature.

3. Picking Up the Nail When It Is Still Hot

Be careful when handling your dabbing gear—it gets HOT.

You might instinctively grab the nail or banger like a bong bowl, but this will likely burn you. Unlike bong bowls, dab nails retain extreme heat.

If you're in doubt, let the rig owner hold it. And always warn your guests about hot nails.

4. Your Dabbing Technique Is Too Slow

It does take some patience to get your dab rig heated up, but once it is, you have to act fast.

Going too slow can melt your wax before it hits the nail. Instead, approach the nail or banger at a 45-degree angle and try to inhale in a single motion.

You don’t need to use a lot of concentrate when dabbing. It's like a snap, not a bowl—meant to be taken in one hit.

5. Overloading the Nail or Banger

Too much wax on your dab tool can cause the nail to cool too quickly. This disrupts the temperature balance needed for proper vaporization.

If the nail loses temperature too fast, the wax won't vaporize—it will just melt and sit there. That’s why it’s called a “dab”—less is more.

6. Missing The Nail

You've got everything ready, then suddenly—your dab is on the carpet. Tragic.

Cannabis concentrates vary in consistencies, and some are harder to handle. Using a dab tool set helps avoid spills. It lets you scrape wax, scoop crumble, and pick up shatter easily.

7. Mishandling Your Dab Rig

Knocking over or breaking your dab rig can ruin a session. Improper holding can also cause burns, spills, or broken glass.

Most dab rigs are held by the main chamber or base. Some even have handles. Watch an experienced dabber before trying it yourself.

Good Dabs Only!

There's a bit of finesse to the art of dabbing. It takes a little practice, but that practice is fun and rewarding. Once you get the hang of it, it’s just like riding a bike—smooth dabs every time.

Ready to Elevate Your Dab Game?

Avoiding these common mistakes will not only improve your experience but also help you get the most out of your concentrates. Whether you're new to dabbing or just want smoother, more effective sessions, choosing the right gear makes all the difference.
