Lottery sales in mainland China fell 40.7% year-on-year to nearly 34.77 billion yuan (50.7%) in June, marking the fifth straight month of decline, according to official data from China's finance ministry.
The ministry attributed the steep annual decline in June to unusually high lottery sales a year ago, when the quadrennial World Cup soccer tournament boosted sales.
Sports lottery sales fell 52.3% year-on-year to 18.85 billion yuan in June, the official tally showed.
Welfare lottery sales fell 16.6% to 15.92 billion yuan in June.
Sales of all types of lottery tickets in mainland China in the first half of 2019 reached 212.6 billion yuan, down 13.3% from the first half of 2018, the ministry said. Welfare lottery sales fell 11.6% year-on-year to about 97.76 billion yuan, while sports lottery sales fell 14.7% to 114.4 billion yuan.
The largest lottery market in mainland China is still Guangdong, with total sales of lottery products falling 14.5% year-on-year to 19.67 billion yuan in the first half of the year.
Guangdong followed, with total sales of welfare and sports lottery tickets falling 13.6% year-on-year to just over 18.9 billion yuan. China's eastern province of Shandong came in third with total ticket sales of 17.29 billion yuan, down 7.0% year-on-year, official data showed.
