Prologue
”Attack!” The battle roared in Leafstorm’s ears. A dark gray muscular Tom pinned her and slashed her belly. Leafstorm kicked him off with her hind legs and teared at his ear. He screeched as blood poured out. He raked his claws helplessly on her neck, before another muscular Tom slammed into her. Vengeance Leafstorm thought. Vengeance raked his claws on her neck. Pain surged throughout Leafstorm’s body. She tried to bite his muzzle but missed. He teared at her ear. Leafstorm clawed at his head. She pounced on him but he rolled her over. And rolled, and rolled and rolled but she loosened his grip and jumped out of his arms. He kept rolling and almost fell off the deaddrop cliff. “HELP!” He screeched. Leafstorm felt her paws freeze into the ground. “I HATE YOU CLAN CATS!” He screamed. His claws make marks in the ground before he fell. Leafstorm stood at the edge watching him. All the cats fighting watched him fall down deaddrop cliff. “She killed him.” A rogue whispered. I did not! Leafstorm thought. He fell on his own! Everyone stood open mouthed around her. “She actually did.” “She is really strong.” “Wow.”
“Congratulations on defeating Vengeance.” Greenstar spoke. “Your clan honors you.”
”Leafstorm!” “Leafstorm!” “Leafstorm!”
Lightclan cheered. At the corner of her eye she saw her mother whisper something to Willowtail and Gingerspots. She was unsure what she was saying but then her father came and nuzzled her wounded neck Marshreed had fixed which stung as he nuzzled it. “Were you scared Leafstorm?” He asked her. Then louder he added. “You were so brave. I’m glad Goldenshade and I raised you like that.” Oh now you love me. “Yes we did.” Goldenshade added. “Now look at her.”
When I was young you worshipped Sunsetrose. If she stubbed her paw on her own and she would yell “Leafkit pushed me!” You would scold me and put me in time out. And if she pushed me and you saw, you would say “It’s okay. Sunsetkit loves you. She must have been joking around. And all the apprentices liked her better except for Marshpaw who thought it was annoying when she yelled for him to treat her before the elders “I have a longer life to live! I need it more than them!” Or she would tell him to hurry up. At least he could see what she was doing.
Leafstorm felt anger deep inside her. They did nothing to help her.
Leafstorm was awake when everyone was asleep. She couldn’t sleep. That’s when she decided to run away. She slowly crept out of the warrior den and into the clan clearing. She grabbed a leftover squirrel and left the camp. She didn’t look back.
Chapter 1
Leafstorm padded towards the rogue camp. Her gaze swept over the sleeping cats.
A gray cat was standing sentry. They tasted the air and called “Someone’s here!”
Then tasted the air again. “Clan cat!” The clan immediately began to panic.
A silver she-cat wrapped her tail around her kits. A black one paced around hers. Leafstorm knew it was her chance.
“Wait! Wait!” She called. “I need to speak to all of you!” The rogues paused. “It’s the cat who killed Vengeance!” A small brown Tom said.
This followed with murmurs and hissing.
“But Vengeance did say that whoever killed him would become leader.” The gray Tom spoke.
“He also said that he wouldn’t take it lightly. He just said that so he would stay leader.” Someone hissed. “She shouldn’t become our leader!” A black Tom with white splotches hissed. “She killed my father. She shouldn’t be trusted.”
“I didn’t even like him very much.” A dark gray she cat said. “He wasn’t the best dad. To you he is but to me not so much.”
Leafstorm remembered the muscular body that fell over deaddrop cliff, screaming “I HATE YOU CLAN CATS!”
“But that was what Vengeance said. She should become our leader.” A golden she-cat pointed out. Murmurs of agreement followed with her message.
The golden she-cat padded up to her. “I’m Sun. Who are you?” “Leafstorm.” She replied. “Huh. Clan cat name. Come on. I’m going to show you where Vengeance used to sleep.”
She padded to a tunnel in the ground. “Now you will sleep here.” They both crawled inside.
Some teeth and claws were in the den. Leafstorm recognized dog teeth and cat teeth alike. Some fox claws as well.
“No one knows why he had those. Maybe to sharpen his claws or to attach them to his to deliver a better scratch.”
Sun padded to a small rocky overhang. “This is where mothers sleep.” A black kit trotted up to her.
“Are you from a clan?” Curious eyes directly in hers.
“Eclipse, come here.” The gentle voice of the black she-cat carried across the wind.
Then Sun walked to a hole in the dirt wall filled with thrushes, mice, squirrels and rabbits.
“This is where we put the prey we hunt.” Sun explained. “Broken and Shattered went hunting.” They went to a nest below some sticks and leaves to form a clan den but with less leaves on the roof and less stable and reinforced.
“This is where Vengeance puts cats that misbehave. They sleep in there until Vengeance tells them they can stop. Sometimes he just does it to make you follow his rules. I have only been in there when Vengeance wanted to make me see what happens when you disobey. Every trainer goes in there when they become them.”
Sun led Leafstorm to an area shaded by a leaf overhang.
“This is where fighters like me sleep. The gray Tom is Birch. The fluffy one is Lion. The brown she-cat is Swift. And that’s Burn.”
Swift looked directly into Leafstorm’s eyes and after a moment ran to her. “My kit! My kit is back!” Swift must have noticed the look of confusion on Leafstorm’s face. “I will explain later. For now follow me.” I don’t want to burst her bubble but I’m not her kit. I’m Goldenshade and Lionclaw’s no matter how much I don’t want to admit it. You can’t change where you come from.
