Even native right-hander Kim Min-woo is out for the season

Professional baseball's Hanwha Eagles, who are having a difficult April, have suffered a double blow. Native right-hander Kim Min-woo ( pictured ) , who played a part in the starting lineup, ended the season early after suffering from injury for two consecutive years.

Until the 24th, Hanwha had only won 4 out of 17 games held this month. This was largely due to the slump in the batting lineup. The bats of key hitters showed severe ups and downs. Jonathan Peraza, who had a batting average of over .500 in 8 games in March, fell silent this month with a monthly batting average of 0.225, and Noh Si-hwan also fell into a long hitting drought. Chae Eun-seong and Ahn Chi-hong also failed to meet expectations. Monthly team batting average, slugging percentage, and home runs all ranked last in the league.

Fortunately, the situation on the mound was better. At the center of it all was the starting lineup. According to statistics site KB Report, the monthly ERA of Hanwha's starting pitchers was 4.63, ranking 4th in the league.

Minwoo Kim also contributed here. Building on the momentum of his first win with 5 scoreless innings on the 26th of last month, he also pitched well against Kiwoom Heroes on the 7th of this month, allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. The average ERA for the season was in the low 2-point range, making him the card with the most momentum along with Ricardo Sanchez. He voluntarily came off the mound in the game against the KIA Tigers on the 13th due to elbow inflammation, but was expected to return after a short break.

As a result, this was his last appearance this season. Hanwha announced the day before that Kim Min-woo was scheduled to undergo surgery. During his rehabilitation, the pain recurred while playing catch, and the player himself opted for surgery. This is his second Tommy John surgery since his high school days. This is also the second consecutive season out due to injury.

This is painful news not only for me but also for the team. Minwoo Kim was one of the most anticipated resources on the Hanwha mound this year. At the end of last season, he spent his own money to visit the Driveline Baseball Center in Seattle, USA, to reexamine his technical skills, and joined the starting lineup after pitching well in spring training. In the three games since the regular season opened, the runners on base per inning (WHIP) was only 1.05.

Kim Min-woo's departure does not immediately leave a hole in the starting lineup. High school rookie Hwang Jun-seo is holding up better than expected. The problem is the knock-on effect it will have on the bullpen as he transitions to a starting role. Except for Kim Beom-su, who was sent down to the second team after a recent slump, there are no left-handed resources.

The roles of other starters also became important. Previously, Hwang Jun-seo could be considered as a replacement in case of emergency, but now it is impossible. In particular, Moon Dong-ju’s rebound is urgent. His earned run average in five games this season is 6.56. The day before, he gave up 7 hits and 5 runs (4 earned runs) and left the mound without completing 5 innings.
