The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation has released a report studying the expenditure patterns of Indian families. This report compares the expenditure of people in urban and rural areas. It highlights what Indian families spend the most money on.
According to the report titled "Consumer Expenditure Survey 2022-23" published by the Ministry, various aspects of Monthly Per Capita Expenditure (MPCE) of Indian families have been analyzed. These figures indicate what Indian families spend the largest portion of their income on.
According to the report, Indian families spend the most money on food. People in rural areas spend a total of 46.38% of their expenses on food, while in urban areas, it is 39.17%. Among these, the highest expenditure is on beverages, fresh food items, and processed food items, which account for 9.62% in rural areas and 10.64% in urban areas.
In addition to food items, they also spend on non-food items such as transportation, consumer services, healthcare, entertainment, and durable goods. Rural families spend 7.55% on transportation, 7.13% on healthcare, and 6.89% on durable goods. The share of non-food items in urban areas is 61%, while in rural areas, it is 53.62%. People in urban areas spend 8.59% of their expenses on transportation.
