The Riches Of Thankfulness

Thankfulness multiplies God’s goodness in our life. If I gave my son an extra special gift and shortly thereafter, he became dissatisfied and began complaining about everything he didn’t have, was constantly begging me for more, and never wanted to talk to me unless it was about what he wanted me to give him—I would be very disappointed.

I would not be inclined to bless him with more. In fact, just the opposite because it would seem to me that my blessings were hurting him. No parent wants their resources to be used to hurt their own children.

Neither does God.

How rich is our heart of thankfulness towards God? Do we thank Him daily for His abundant blessings—salvation, the sun, our home, job, health, resources, ministry opportunities, talents, sight, sound and all the things we take for granted? Or, do we talk with Him only when we want something like—healing, money, peace, love, a job, etc.?

Do we consider Him to be unloving or uncaring because He has not blessed us with the success, children, relationships or assets we believe we deserve? When we begin to inventory the blessings He’s already given us, we realize we have far more than we deserve. It changes our heart. We become the child He delights to please with His goodness. We become the child of God who experiences what the Psalmist wrote.

“Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind!” (Psalms 31:19) God is our loving Father.

He blesses us with goodness we can’t comprehend. He blesses us more than anyone else is capable of blessing us. When our heart is thankful, we love Him more than we love anything or anyone else and—we follow Him. In Him, His gifts surround us and we find we want for nothing except Him. A thankful heart makes us richer than we could ever imagine!
