Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah has acknowledged the strength of Algeria ahead of their AFCON encounter, describing the North African giants as a team with quality in every department. Speaking during pre-match media engagements, Appiah praised the depth, organisation, and experience of the opposition while outlining his side’s approach to the challenge.

Respect for a Strong Opponent

Appiah admitted that facing Algeria would be one of the toughest tests of the tournament for Sudan, given their balance between defensive solidity and attacking creativity. He highlighted Algeria’s tactical discipline and ability to control games, noting that they possess match-winners across the pitch.

Preparing for the Challenge

Despite recognising Algeria’s strengths, Appiah stressed that Sudan are approaching the match with belief and determination. The coaching staff have focused on structure, discipline, and collective effort as key components of their game plan.

He also pointed out that tournament football often produces surprises, especially when teams remain compact and focused for the full 90 minutes.

Emphasis on Tactical Discipline

According to Appiah, avoiding simple mistakes will be crucial. He emphasised the need for concentration, defensive organisation, and quick transitions if Sudan are to compete effectively against such a high-quality opponent.

The coach believes that maintaining tactical discipline could allow his side to frustrate Algeria and create opportunities on the counterattack.

Focus on Performance and Growth

While the immediate focus is on the match result, Appiah also highlighted the importance of learning and growth. Competing against elite teams is part of the development process, and Sudan aim to use the AFCON platform to gain valuable experience and confidence.
