This March marks the 20th anniversary of the National Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and New York State plans to celebrate it. As part of its activities to raise awareness of problem gambling, Empire State will be hosting an event to discuss the topic, as well as lighting up several buildings in yellow.

Empire State has a responsible play partnership that includes the New York State Gaming Board, the New York State Addiction Services and Support Bureau, and the New York Committee on Problem Gambling. The three are responsible for hosting events where participants can gain more knowledge about problem gambling and how to avoid it.

Robert Williams, managing director of NYSGC, said that through the efforts of the NCPG and RPP, unions can bring attention to the critical issues that promote a safe and responsible gambling environment. He said that as Empire State's gambling options continue to grow, it is important for locals to know about the numerous responsible play tools they have in their hands.

Senator Joe Adabbo is also a major proponent of responsible play. He said it is important to strengthen problem gambling resources as the state strengthens its gambling options. He also mentioned a series of regulations recently passed by New York City's Zee on new rules for gambling advertising, noting that problem gambling should be viewed as a mental health issue, not just an addiction.

The committee approved a series of new regulations on advertising almost unanimously at a recent meeting. One of the purposes of the new regulations is to limit exposure to sports betting advertising and marketing to underage betters. In addition, a ban on false, deceitful and misleading statements has also been approved by committee officials.

During March, the RPP will light buildings across the state in yellow, a color related to problem gambling awareness. Other than that, landmarks and game facilities turn yellow. These properties include Albany International Airport Gateway, Empire State Plaza, Fairport Lift Bridge, Grand Central Terminal, and the Lake Placid Olympic Jump Complex.

Also, many events will be held throughout March. One of them was already held at the Javits Center last week. Then, on March 14, the RPP will organize a screening day to help find people who can suffer from problem gambling. At the end of the month, there will also be a local listening session by OASAS with the leaders of the problem gambling treatment community.

In early March, Empire City Casino also joined the National Problem Gambling Awareness Month. For this year's campaign, Game Property has teamed up with the Mid-Hudson Problem Gambling Resource Center. During the month of March, Port Coacher will turn blue and yellow.
