The Singing Nun-Dominique
Philips 40152 (USA) 1963
It is almost fitting that the number 1 record in the USA at
Christmas 1963 would be sung by a Roman Catholic nun. Sister
Luc Gabriel, dubbed The Singing Nun and Soeur Sourire (Sister
Smile) by the record company, was a member of the Missionary
Dominican Sisters of Our Lady order in Belgium. As a nun, she
was known for her song writing and singing and was encouraged by
her order to record an album. Dominique was a smash hit, topping
the charts almost everywhere. Unfortunately, fame would be fleeting
for her, and subsequent releases failed to sell. She left her
religious order in 1966, although continuing to live her faith.
She died in 1985.
