Launched in 2016, the Education Matters Zimbabwe Career Connect Internship Program is an experiential service learning initiative that places Zimbabwean students enrolled in Ashesi University in Ghana, the United States, and Canada with Zimbabwean businesses and non-governmental organizations during their summer break from education.
The range of internship options is extensive and tailored to the preferences of the chosen student participants. In June and July, the program lasts for eight weeks, and the internship is unpaid. In addition to paying a small administrative fee to cover program costs on the ground, student participants are asked to secure funding for their own expenditures during their internship.
Students participate in weekly feedback meetings on Friday afternoons as part of the program.
take part in social and community service projects in groups, as well as events organized by EducationUSA and USAP Community School, such as an orientation for prospective students and a college expo. Along with documenting their experiences in a guided diary, students will also complete a final project that either leaves their workplace in a better state than when they arrived or collaborates with a mentor on a research project that benefits both the internship site and the student.
