- Part 1: Ancient Civilization
- In ancient times, rich families paid people to teach their kids reading and writing. It was only reserved for the very rich who could afford private tutors, so not many people were educated.
- Part 2: Middle Ages
- During the Middle Ages, places of religion often had schools, and people wanted to teach kids religion. That’s why education and schools started: to teach kids how to practice their religion. Also, the first colleges were started. Colleges are places where you can a certificate or degree for learning or knowing something. For example, if you want to be a musician, you are sometimes required to have a degree in Musical Arts. Colleges and universities like the University of Oxford were started this time.
- Part 3: Renaissance
- The Renaissance was a time in Europe when people started being more educated, music was being introduced to the world, and people started innovating. More people became interested in learning new things, so more people went to school.
- Part 4: 19th, 20th, 21st Centuries
- During the Industrial Revolution, more people needed to be educated. So more people began going to school. Now, 90% of kids go to school. 80% of those go to free, public schools. The other 10% go to paid, private schools.
- Part 5: History of Homework
- In Egypt, homework started when kids going to school didn’t finish the classwork. The teacher told the students to go home and finish it. That started homework, which continues on today. I know most of you don’t like homework, but it’s important to remember what you learned in class.
- Part 6: Fun Facts
- 1. School bus yellow is a real color, created by the United States of America Department of Transportation, since yellow is a bright color and helps cars remember there are kids inside.
- 2. The oldest school is in Greece, founded by a famous philosopher, Pythagoras.
- 3. In most countries, lunches are given for free in public schools.
