Osteopenia: How’s It Different From Osteoporosis?

Osteopenia Introduction

Osteopenia is a condition that arises when bones are weakened due to reduced bone mineral density (BMD). BMD is the measure of calcium and mineral content in bones. It precedes osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become extremely fragile and prone to fractures. Bones are living tissues that undergo continuous breakdown and rebuilding. With age, the breakdown process accelerates, and the pace of rebuilding slows, resulting in bones losing their normal composition and strength. Osteopenia is the early stage of this process. As osteopenia progresses, bones continue to deteriorate, becoming vulnerable to fractures. Osteopenia can lead to osteoporosis if not addressed early.
