For now, governor says opening of Osaka IR 2029 is not dangerous

The Osaka Prefecture governor said the proposed Osaka Unified Resort (IR), which houses casinos, would still be open "for now" "between the autumn and winter of fiscal 2029," and that date was "unaffected by the long-term review" by the national government of the metropolitan's IR district development plan.

Hirofumi Yoshimura was speaking on Friday, a day after Kyodo reported that a government official said it could be "very difficult" to make a decision this year on the IR plans in Osaka (pictured) or Nagasaki Prefecture.

According to GGRAsia's Japan correspondent, the fiscal year 2029 will begin on April 1, 2029, and end on March 31, 2030.

Postponed beyond 2022 on the calendar year-end for approval of IR plans in either city, Kyodo reported on Thursday, without citing sources for further information, that the vibrant opening dates for such resorts (Osaka 2029 and Nagasaki 2027) could be postponed.

The mayor of Osaka said last month that national authorities had asked for more information about the proposed site on the artificial island of Yume-Shima in Osaka Bay.

Mr Yoshimura's comments on Friday acknowledged: "Now the only issue the government is investigating is the land issue. We have submitted everything they have asked for."

He added: "We want the national government to give us approval as soon as possible."

MGM Resorts International had mentioned a possible decision on Osaka IR by this fall as part of a proposed private-sector partnership for the 1.8 trillion yen ($7.9 billion at current exchange rates).

Several Osaka lawmakers have recently pressed senior government officials to quickly approve Osaka's IR plan.

Local government representatives in Nagasaki have repeatedly urged authorities to give more information about the funds promoted by the 438.3 billion-yen project.
