Emergency Vet Philadelphia - FAQs

1- What can I do if I can't afford a vet?

Get a line of credit. Many vet places usually have programs that will allow you to pay vet bills later. You can also sell some of your stuff to raise cash. We all have "stuff" that we really don't need or use. Sell some things online or have a yard sale.

2- How do you get free vet care?

Sometimes it just isn't possible to raise all of the money you need to help with your high vet bills. Trust me there is still hope.  There are many charities that are available and might have help. A good example is a human society. They have a list of charities and organizations that are out there to help with this. You can contact them and find out what they offer.

3-How soon can you use pet insurance?

Many insurances have a 14-day grace period. However, some will cover accidents that happen just 48 hours after the initial sign up. This is the kind of information that you need to discuss with the insurance company.

4-What does pet insurance actually cover?

It covers things that you aren't expecting. They include things like poisoning, ingestion of foreign objects, ligament tears, broken bones, and illness i.e cancer treatments. Some services are not covered in the insurance for example we have routine shots done yearly and the check-ups. All these services will need extra charges.

5- Pet Insurance worth the Cost?

In most cases, pet insurance tend not to be worth it. The dogs’ lifespan and insurance cover is estimated to be $5000 which when you analyze carefully does not make sense if you own a healthy and happy dog.

6-Where can I leave my dog for a week?

There are a few options. You can get a pet sitter. A pet sitter comes to your home and lets your dog out a few times a day, including mornings and evenings. The pet sitters can also stay in your home. Another option is boarding your pet in a pet hotel or a kennel. Or you can find a friend or neighbor that is willing to watch your pet. You could also take your pet to a pet hotel or a kennel.

7-Do dogs get sad when boarded?

Dogs can get sad when boarded depending on past experiences.  Some get sad. Some dogs get sad when it is their first time boarding. The dogs do not know that their owners will be back soon to take them home. If you travel a lot, they start to understand that they are on a vacation and you will be back and are typically more relaxed.

8-Will my dog hate me if I board him?

Whether you board your dog or leave them at home, they are going to stress, if that is the type of dog they are. You should learn your dog’s behavior to know what they like and hate. When you board a dog they are together with many other dogs, and there would be barking and a lot of noise. This obviously is not a home setting. Having a pet sitter allows your dog to remain in your home.

9-Do dogs miss their owners when re-homed?

Yes, of course!!!Dogs in most cases build bonds with their owners that hopefully should last a lifetime. However, the bond gets broken due to unavoidable circumstances. They will definitely show symptoms of depression and anxiety.  This is very present if they had a wonderful owner and bond.

10.-Are dog kennels bad for dogs?

Kennels are not the best housing for dogs but some dogs get to stay in kennels without worry for a short time. However, if you don't think your dog would like to stay in a kennel, then you can seek an upscale kennel that will allow your dog to move around a bit more. This would be ideal for dogs that are active and older ones.

11. Do dogs get bored in kennels?

Kennels and crates are a dog's safe space. The best place for the dog to go when bored, frightened, and when anxious is inside the kennel. The kennels keep them safe and their surroundings too. The dogs should be trained to identify the kennel as a positive thing but not a form of punishment.

12.  Do groomers sedate dogs?

No. Legally they are not allowed to sedate a dog. Groomers should not sedate the dogs but could do so with instructions from the vet. The groomers can also do so if only they work alongside a vet and thinks it is wise to do so. Just ask your vet what the best solution they think would be for your dog.

13. How do groomers calm dogs?

Dogs are made to calm down by groomers in many ways such as special tethers that are given to them. They also have a trick of placing a towel over the dog's head that has a calming effect on the dog as well. All groomer's have their own techniques to calm the dog and get them to relax for them.

14. Can dogs be traumatized at groomers?

Yes, this can happen. Yes, it can happen. Yes, this is likely to happen. Just like people, dogs can also be ashamed of their new do. They will display this as embarrassed or depressed. Some places could be a bit rough, which the dog will display fear when going. However, most of the time, if the dog doesn't want to go it's because it doesn't like baths and all that primping. You can think about it at home, does your dog enjoy it while you bathe it? If they don’t, they will also not want other people to do so.
