Janet Mitchell (1912-1998) was a prominent Canadian artist from Medicine Hat, Alberta, known for her vibrant depictions of Calgary streets and Alberta towns. Adopted by John and Janet Mitchell, her early life was marked by personal challenges, including the death of her mother and a strained relationship with her stepmother. Despite a lack of initial support for her artistic aspirations, she took art classes and developed her skills, sketching scenes from daily life.

Mitchell’s artistic journey gained momentum after her father's death in 1939, leading her to support her family while pursuing art on the side. She became involved in the Calgary art community, participating in exhibitions and attending workshops. Influenced by artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Marc Chagall, she explored a unique style that combined realism with elements of fantasy.

Over her six-decade career, Mitchell received numerous accolades, including membership in the Royal Canadian Academy and major exhibitions such as a retrospective at the Glenbow Museum in 1977. Her work is celebrated for its joyful, dynamic imagery and is part of many public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada. She remains a significant figure in Alberta’s art history, recognized for her contributions and influence in the art community.
