Macau's tourism boss expects 130,000 tourists to visit Macau every day during the holiday season in mainland China surrounding Labor Day on May 1. That brings daily arrivals to a higher level than the Qingming season in early April, but that's about 23 percent lower than nearly 170,000 daily during February's most recent Lunar New Year holiday.

On the sidelines of Thursday's public event, the director of the Macau government's tourism agency (MGTO), Maria Helena de Sena Fernandez, gave a prediction for the May festival in comments to local media.

If realized, that would represent about 82% of daily visitor arrivals recorded during the Labor Day holiday in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. But the 130,000 daily figure would be about 32% higher than the figure achieved last year.

This year, the State Council of China designated the Labor Day holiday period from May 1, a Wednesday, to May 5, a Sunday. It was an eight-day break in mainland China.

Macau saw just under 98,400 daily visitor arrivals during the Labor Day holiday of 2023 on the mainland, which ran for five days from April 29 to May 3 of that year.

The same holiday season in 2019 was just four days from the mainland, bringing the total to 636,644 visitors, averaging 159,161 a day, according to data from the Tourism Authority.
