Irene McCaugherty (1914-1996) was a Canadian self-taught artist, writer, and poet known for her folk-art paintings of southern Alberta's pioneer life. Her works, often long and narrow, reflect the view from her truck as she documented daily life and cultural narratives with humor and color. McCaugherty's unique watercolors defy traditional perspective, capturing an imaginative past of prairie life. She created over 1,000 paintings and wrote a newspaper column, self-published books, and produced recordings. Her contributions earned her an Alberta Achievement award and an Honorary Doctor of Law degree. Her art is displayed in several major Canadian institutions.
