Cassie’s POV:
“Alright, bye class! Go off to your next class or whatever.” Mrs Kim muttered, focusing on her nails.
Earlier in the class, she started fretting because one of her nails fell off. I rolled my eyes and grabbed my stuff, heading to the library. I needed to go through the stuff I missed while I was in hospital.
Mrs Kim was arguably one of the dumbest teachers in the school. She was somehow the junior maths teacher, even though she didn’t know what the pythagoras theorem was. She was probably just hired because of the dwindling number of teachers in this school.
I arrived at the library and pulled the copy of notes out of my bag. Blaze had photocopied them from his own ones, so I could highlight whatever I needed. I flipped the page over the staple and smoothened down the crease. I took a glance at which subject it was and saw maths.
Heh, my parents have already taught me maths till year 12, but oh well…
I easily breezed through the notes, and Blaze had even added a few questions to solve so I could understand it better. I looked up at the clock to check the time.
5:02 pm
Somebody tapped my shoulder. Hoping it was Blaze, I turned around, but instead, I saw another person.
Brandon.
“What’s up Cass?” He asked smugly.
“Go away, don’t you have anything better to do? Maybe learning to use your brain? Oh wait, you don’t have one.” I snorted.
“Hmm, the only thing in my brain is you.” He smirked.
“What? And a billion other girls you’re just going to hurt?” I sighed.
I really don’t have time for this guy’s blabbering.
“More like a billion times you.” Brandon smiled, weirdly.
“Alright, this is just cringe at this point, can I throw up?” Somebody snorted from behind Brandon.
Brandon whipped his head around angrily, seeing Blaze with a concerned and disgusted look. Brandon’s smile turned into a sneer and he loomed over Blaze menacingly.
“Oh, look who it is. Itty bitty Blazey who needs somebody to save him every time. Don’t you have anything to do? Maybe getting flowers for your brother’s grave?” Brandon sneered.
Blaze went pale, then his face twisted into fury.
“Do not, I repeat, do not speak of my brother like that.” He hissed.
“Or what? You’re going to get your pathetic girlfriend to karate-chop me?” Brandon scoffed.
“You do realise I am right here? And besides, calling me pathetic won’t help you go out with me.” I snorted.
“Speaking of which, I’m having dinner tonight, care to join?” Brandon smirked, turning to face me.
I looked at him in disgust. Who does he think he is?
“I would rather get beaten up, thank you very much.” I wrinkled my nose.
Brandon turned to face me completely.
“Your wish.” He sneered, then yanked out my chair harshly.
I nearly fell out of my chair and narrowed my eyes. I noticed Brandon was about to raise a sharpened pencil to scratch me with, and I narrowly dodged it. I kicked his foot off balance and hopped up, snatching the pencil from his hands. Brandon wasn’t prepared and landed right on his butt. Blaze stifled a snicker and walked over to me. Even with the mask on, I could tell he was smiling.
“Hey, you okay?” He greeted me.
“Been better, but oh well.” I shrugged, giving him a smile.
Brandon got up and was about to scramble away, but Blaze gave him a well deserved punch in the face.
“So much for itty bitty.” He hissed.
Brandon gave him a scowl and ran off to the other direction. Blaze turned to me.
“I think you should watch out, Brandon’s up to no good.” He sighed.
“I guess, but all that aside, you got your notes?” I asked.
“Yep, right here.” Blaze smiled, holding up his notes.
I couldn’t help but realise that he was smiling a lot more lately, or I’m just being weird. When I first saw him, he was quiet, moody, introverted, basically like those ‘teenagers’ in movies. MAJOR grouches. Now, he was an absolute sweetheart.
Wait, what?
He was really nice to me now, but to others… not so much. Maybe it’s to make up for his behaviour? I took a seat in my previous spot.
“I swear, Brandon needs to understand what personal space is.” I muttered.
“Seriously though.” Blaze huffed.
“Also, are you coming to Mitchell’s meet-up?” I asked him, looking up from my notes.
“Uhh, maybe.” Blaze mumbled hesitantly.
“I’m probably going to be there, I hope you come!” I chirped.
Blaze looked at me affectionately with his blue eyes. I looked back at them for a moment, but quickly shook my head. Blaze came and took a seat beside me, spreading his notes out on the table and taking out his highlighter.
“Alright, I feel like you’re fine with maths, so I’ll help with biology for now.” Blaze explained, noticing the pile of highlighted maths notes beside me.
“Great!” I chirped, pulling out my notes for biology.
Blaze’s hood fell over his head, blocking what he was writing. He straightened his back and I noticed his writing. He was currently writing down a few trivia questions for later so I could understand better. I smiled at him and looked at the notes.
“Alright, should we focus on cells for this session?” Blaze asked.
“Yeah, sure!” I smiled.
“Okay, uhh.. Where do I start?” Blaze muttered, barely loud enough for me to hear.
Blaze and I studied for a while, even though most of the time we were chatting. I somehow managed to understand some of the stuff he taught me. I was now being tested.
“Okay, what does the mitochondria do?” Blaze questioned.
“Uhh… digests food? Ooh! Wait, no! It produces energy!” I corrected myself.
“Nice! You’re getting it!” Blaze smiled.
I exhaled in relief and looked up at the clock.
7:58 pm
“Oh, gosh it’s nearly dinner time.” I said in surprise.
“Dang, already? Well, I guess we should pack up. Meet you here in the same spot tomorrow?” Blaze asked.
“Sure! See you!” I smiled, hauling my tote bag onto my back.
I walked out the door with Blaze, and he walked me to my dorm.
“Blaze, it’s fine! Brandon isn’t going to kill me you know, besides I can defend myself!” I insisted.
“I need to make sure he doesn’t try to come after you again! He tried to stab you with a pencil, in front of people. Imagine what he’ll do when he finds you alone!” Blaze argued.
“No, after you spoke back to him and punched him, he’s more likely to come after you!” I sighed.
“Fine, you can walk with me.” Blaze huffed in exasperation.
“Yay!” I chirped.
We turned to walk towards Blaze’s dorm, instead of the route towards mine.
“I really hope you get to come, apparently we’re going to have a movie night then we’re going to have a picnic in the park!” I explained excitedly.
“Dang, I need to ask my mum, that sounds really cool!” Blaze agreed.
“Yeah, oh! Is that Liam over there?” I asked, craning my head to the side.
Blaze took a few steps back to check, and he was right there.
“Liam! Over here!” Blaze called, and Liam turned around.
Liam shoved something into his coat and walked over to them.
“Hey guys! What’s up?” Liam chirped.
“Not much.” I shrugged. “Hey, umm, do you mind taking Blaze to his dorm?” I asked, giving Blaze a meaningful smirk.
“Wha-” Blaze started.
“Sure!” Liam cut him off, yanking him and walking away.
I could almost hear Blaze’s groans and walked off happily. Blaze was much more likely to get hurt than I was, right?
Wrong.
