Kangwon Land, the promoter of Kangwon Land (pictured), the only casino resort in Korea where domestic gambling is allowed, has been extended until 6 a.m. on September 7, the temporary closure of the casino due to COVID-19 control measures.
The shutdown was reactivated on Aug. 23 amid a surge in infections across the country. The return to shutdown comes after a VIP outage that has lasted since May.
Casino sales are expected to fall from 10 a.m. on Aug. 23 to 6 a.m. on Sept. 7, based on average daily casino sales in the first half of 2020, the company said in a filing with the Korea Exchange on Friday.
Kangwon Land first closed its casino in late February due to COVID-19 related reasons due to the spread of infections in South Korea. Kangwon Land Resort is about 150 km (93 miles) from the capital, Seoul.
During August, South Korea said it was switching to so-called "Level 2" for "social distancing" as a way to stem the rise in COVID-19 cases. The company said the extension of the casino closure period was in line with the country's Level 2 protocols.
As of 12 a.m. on Monday, South Korea recorded 248 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the national tally to 19,947. A total of 14,973 people have already been "unquarantined" and 324 have died from the disease, according to a dedicated website of the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare.
