Which one is the future, LCD or OLED?

Since the explosion of full-screen displays, various notch screens and water-drop screens have spread all over the streets, and with the full-screen display comes the popularity of OLED screens. Because of the material of OLED, it is easier to make special-shaped screens. In addition, more and more mobile phones now include under-screen fingerprints. The thin and light features of OLED are also favored by major manufacturers. But OLED also has shortcomings that cannot be ignored.

LCD is a good screen, but for some reason it has been gradually marginalized by the market. The thin, light and soft characteristics of OLED are popular because it conforms to the current design concept of mobile phones. However, behind the highlights of OLED are hidden problems such as screen burn-in,corning ces 2024 screen flickering, resolution problems caused by different pixel arrangements, etc.

Take the recent hot topic "DC dimming", which is to solve the screen flicker problem caused by OLED low-frequency PWM dimming. You may not know that most OLED screens use PWM dimming at low brightness. The so-called PWM dimming changes the brightness by repeatedly switching the screen on and off.oled panel manufacturers Although this kind of screen flicker is not visible to the naked eye, it is We can clearly discover this fact through camera capture.

Although many manufacturers have updated DC/DC-like dimming functions on their latest flagship mobile phones, turning on DC dimming will cause the screen brightness to be slightly reduced and the color accuracy to be slightly inaccurate. LCD screens have profound technical accumulation, and there is no need to worry about color performance. Because of this, the cost of LCD screens is much less than OLED, which can bring higher cost performance to users.

Judging from the current thinness and lightness advantages of OLED screens, current flagship mobile phones have not fully demonstrated them. Most flagship mobile phones are still getting thicker and thicker. To make a mobile phone thinner, the screen alone is not enough. In addition, although most of the current OLED screens come from Samsung, Samsung's OLED screens are also divided into three, six or nine grades. The best screen must be reserved for yourself. Of course, if you are as rich as Apple, you will sell it.

In this way, OLED screens are no longer the representative of high-end screens, and the gap between them and LCDs is only which one is more suitable for the current market environment. Having said that, because LCD screens have an extra layer of LED light-emitting backplane than OLEDs, it is difficult to integrate with under-screen fingerprint technology. Coupled with the disadvantage that LCD cannot be bent, it cannot use COP packaging technology to bend the screen to shrink the chin of the mobile phone like OLED.

But these problems with LCD are being solved step by step. Therefore, a mobile phone with LCD screen + under-screen fingerprint + accurate color display + no screen burn-in + no screen flicker is very likely to appear in the second half of the year. It can also be seen that OLED is not an evolutionary product of LCD, but a parallel complement to LCD. After LCD overcomes these difficulties, the user experience will be more perfect. So will the future be dominated by OLED? It’s really hard to tell.
