A spokesperson for Paradise Inc., which operates foreigner-only casinos in South Korea, told GGRAsia that the South Korean government has not asked the foreign-only sector operator to close the game venue due to the recent surge in COVID-19 infections.

"So far, the government, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, has not issued an order to casino operators to close game venues," the person said.

Referring to local rules to prevent further spread of COVID-19, Faradaysco added: "If the social distancing phase goes up to three levels, the government may recommend that venues be temporarily closed."

Kangwon Land's promoter, the only casino resort in South Korea where domestic gambling is allowed, recently temporarily closed its casinos once again, citing the country's shift to a two-tier protocol to contain the virus due to COVID-19 amid rising cases.

The number of new COVID-19 infections confirmed on Sunday was 17,665, including eight imported, with 309 deaths, according to data released by South Korea's Health and Welfare Ministry on Monday. The capital city accounted for 16.9% of the confirmed cases.

Yonhap reported that over 2,200 COVID-19 cases were confirmed nationwide in the nine days to Saturday.

Paradise is interested in Paradise City Casino Resort in Incheon. It operates three different casino complexes. They are Walkerhill in Seoul, Jeju Grand on Jeju Island, and Busan Casino in the southern port city of Busan.

The company closed its four casino sites for two weeks on Mar. 24, in line with South Korea's efforts to curb the further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea. Some of the company's non-game services, such as entertainment venues, were also shut down. The group reopened its casinos in Jeju Island on Apr. 13. It then resumed operations at the other three gaming venues on Apr. 20.

Paradise posted a net loss of nearly 31.88 billion won in the second quarter, expanding from 2.46 billion won in the first three months of its opening in 2020 and 2.06 billion won in the same period a year earlier. It said in an announcement on Aug. 11 that gaming and non-gaming sales had plummeted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
