Former Las Vegas Maxim's New Owners Start Facelift

Years have passed since the 1980s TV and radio commercials called "City Lights" did not raise a glass for Maxim. But these days, the glass is being broken at the closed Flamingo Road Hotel Casino, just east of Streep. Now the new owner of the building is modernizing the nearly 25-year-old building in preparation for the debut of the Westin Casualina Hotel and Spa, which is scheduled for July 1

Since December, workers have been removing interior furniture and Maxim's signature glass exterior. Richard Canapel, sales regional director for Sussex, Colombia, said the project is in the "removal phase" with some outside work gradually brightening the site. Canapel, whose Kentucky-based privately-owned company took over the hotel in September, said it was "basically cleaning the entire building."

$38 million.

In the coming weeks, Maxim's outdoor signage will be replaced with a modified display that includes the Westin logo. The model room will also be open to the public at the end of February.

Canapel said the opening of the new hotel casino will include an all-new 11,000-square-foot spa and 10,000-square-foot extended meeting space. Westin's trademark "Havenly Bed" and "Havenly Bath" features will also be included, respectively
a hotel room.

The remodeling will also increase the total number of rooms in the accommodation from 795 to 825. Canapel has not finalized its rate structure, but expects to rent rooms from $50 to $199 per night, depending on the season and day of the week

Unlike some Las Vegas landmarks past their prime, Maxim was not considered an insider because Columbia Sussex thought Maxim's option would have been too expensive and time consuming. "We want to open this year. If we had to exit and empty this option, we wouldn't have opened it until at least July 2004," Canapel says.

Columbia Sussex operates about 60 hotels in several international markets, including the U.S. and the Horizon Casino Resort in South Lake Tahaw, and the sister hotel Westin Casuarina Realty in Grand Cayman Island, Canapel said.

A casino management company in Sussex, Columbia, will operate a new Las Vegas casino, which is scheduled to open in July, along with the hotel. Canapel, which boasts an area of less than 15,000 square feet, said the casino will serve as a convenience, not a major attraction for the hotel.

Westin is a division of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, a hotel chain headquartered in White Plains, N.Y., operating more than 750 properties in more than 80 countries. In Las Vegas, it previously owned Caesars Palace and Desert Inn, but has not made it to Nevada since selling Desert Inn to casino developer Steve Wynne in June 2000.

Located at 160 E. Flamingo Road, the 795-room maxims opened in 1979 and closed in November 1999, reopening the following month without a casino. It began closing in August 2001.
