History
Sir Albert Sloman laid the groundwork for his vision of a one-of-a-kind research university in 1963. Following his vision, the University of Essex in the United Kingdom was founded in 1964 as 'Essex Spirit,' with Sir Albert Sloman as its first Vice-Chancellor. Essex Spirit welcomed its first class of 122 students in October 1964, who were drawn to the university's unique vision.
Over the next two years, the student body grew to 750 by October 1964, and Lord Butler was appointed Chancellor. From 1970 to 1980, the university expanded its current campus by adding a new health centre, day nursery, bookstore, and an art gallery.
Essex Business School became the UK's first zero-carbon educational institution building in 2015. In 2019, the University of Essex formed the Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) Alliance with seven other prestigious UK universities.

Life as a student
The University of Essex has three campuses in the United Kingdom: Colchester, Southend-on-Sea, and Loughton. Essex student life can be described as culturally diverse and colorful.
Students at the Colchester campus can enjoy the nightlife at a variety of bars and nightclubs. The town is also well-known for its arts and culture, with the world-renowned Arts Centre and Mercury Theatre among its attractions.
Southend is known as "London's playground" and is home to people from all over the world. Students who enjoy sports and adventure can go sailing, kitesurfing, or cycling along the coast. The University of Essex's Southend Campus has an exclusive 'SU Lounge' that students completely manage to provide a safe space for spending time with friends.
The University of Essex's Loughton Campus is close to London. Students can easily travel to London's main city via the Central line train and enjoy the city's incredible nightlife.
Accommodation
All new students at the University of Essex's Colchester and Southend campuses are guaranteed housing for their first year. On-campus housing includes 24-hour security to ensure that all students are safe at all times. A flat or apartment with private rooms and a shared kitchen can house up to 16 students.
The average accommodation cost for self-catered students ranges from £100 to £200 per week, depending on the type of accommodation chosen. If students do not want to pay such a high price for housing, they have several affordable options.
The University of Essex has been awarded the prestigious International Accommodation Quality Mark, with a 90% student satisfaction rating from international students living on campus. The University of Essex was also the winner of the National Student Housing Survey in 2009, as well as the runner-up in 2010 and 2011.
Transport
Students at the University of Essex will find it easy to navigate the campus and the surrounding area. Accommodations in Colchester and Southend are both close to the main campus. Students can either walk or ride their bikes to and from campus. On campus, there is also a secure bike parking facility.
The bus and railway are the best ways to get from the Colchester Campus to the town centre and London.
The Southend Campus is near the airport and only a short train ride from Central London.
The Loughton Campus is close to London and can be reached by taking a short train ride. The Debden underground station is only a 5-minute walk from campus.
Location
Southend, one of the safest towns in the UK, is home to the University of Essex's second cutting-edge campus. Harwich Port and all three campuses are within an hour's drive of central London. The Southend campus, which was recently built at a cost of several million pounds, is easily accessible from the High Street. The Loughton campus is only a five-minute walk from the nearby London Tube station, Debden, on the east end of the Central Line, and can be reached in 35 minutes from Liverpool Street station.
