BACKSTORY

Darrien was born into a wealthy family, his father inheriting a company and his mother a nurse. He was often left with a nanny, though, for days at a time. His parents never 'had time' for their son, and as he grew older, he only wanted their attention more and more. Dinner was more of a formality than family time, and if he got rowdy at all, they would scold him and send him away from the table before he was finished eating.

 

As he grew older, he grew to resent his parents and see his nanny as his mother. In high school, he would lie to the kids at his private school, claiming that his dad was having an affair with the nanny, and that was how he came to be. Of course, when word got back to his parents about it, he was scolded and punished once again. His nanny tried to talk to Darrien about the consequences of his lie, but she was fired before she had the chance to. His father proceeded to tell him that the whole reason she lost her job was his fault, and in a fit of rage, Darrien grabbed his father by the shoulders, shaking him as he screamed at him in tears about how all he ever wanted was for the love of his parents, but he knew they didn't care.

 

In that instant, the look in his father's eyes softened, and he started telling Darrien how much he truly loved him. This caught him off guard, and backing away, he let his father go. Within minutes, though, the heartfelt assurance stopped, and his father just stared at him. Neither of them understood what had happened, and his father stormed out of the room and locked Darrien in his room behind him.

 

The next few weeks were filled with specialists interviewing Darrien, trying to create a profile on him. It wasn't until Charles Xavier showed up at the door that they all learned exactly what happened. Charles offered Darrien a spot at his school for gifted children, and he was extremely eager to go. However, his parents shut the idea down immediately, and sent Xavier on his way.

 

By the end of the week, Darrien was ready to run away and find Xavier's school for himself. However, a gentleman by the name of Alexander Pierce came to the door first. He explained to Darrien's parents that he worked for S.H.I.E.L.D., and they were looking for someone with Darrien's talents to help with interrogations. It would get the teenager out of the home, remove the tarnished reputation he had put on his parents, and keep the term 'mutant' out of the newspapers that would follow him joining the X-Men instead. His parents eagerly accepted the offer, and sent their teenage son off with the stranger.

 

Darrien trained with S.H.I.E.L.D. for years, hiding his true self as he learned about Hydra's mission from Pierce. It was . . . strange, to say the least, but if only the worthy were in the world, he wouldn't have to worry about tarnishing anyone's reputation. He was told he would be loved by those who were chosen, and all he needed was the right partner to help him with the task.

 

Darrien knew just the person, too, and introduced himself to a new recruit to S.H.I.E.L.D. -- a hacker by the name of Callie Grand. She was spunky, had an attitude, and had more computer skills than even he could comprehend. She was perfect, and thankfully, she thought highly of him, as well. All it took was a brush of her cheek, and he could tell she had a crush on him after only a few days. By the end of the week, he had convinced her to move into his dorm room with him, and the two were inseperable for the next 5 years. The whole time, Darrien made sure to keep almost constant physical contact with Callie, whether that be draping his arm over her shoulders or holding her hand. It was exhausting, but after a while, he noticed that he didn't have to manipulate her anymore. She had actually fallen in love with him, and he had fallen for her.

 

In 2014, Hydra was revealed to be in S.H.I.E.L.D., and Darrien admitted to Callie that he was part of Hydra. He wanted her to join him, to help him pull in the new world, but one of their coworkers attempted to shoot Darrien. Out of a fit of rage, he shot back at the man, but Spencer, Callie's best friend, shoved the man out of the way and took the bullet instead. Callie instantly turned on him, and Darrien had no choice but to run. A week later, he tried to return home, only to find out that his parents had both been killed by Project Insight.

Ever since, he's been on his own, moving from city to city and bar to bar, using his inheritance to support himself.

 

 

 

FUN FACTS

• Darrien is a mutant with the ability to influence others via touch. He can only manipulate emotions that are already there, though, bringing forward or suppressing whichever ones he senses. (For example, he cannot make someone love him or hate someone else unless there's already an inkling of desire or distaste.)
  

• He enjoys mainly rock music, and his favorite bands are Apocalyptica and Avenged Sevenfold.
• Darrien smokes, but mainly out of boredom.
• Darrien doesn't drink alcohol.
• He's bi with a female lean.
• He did hard drugs for a month when he first got into S.H.I.E.L.D., but Price straightened him out quickly and got him sober before it had any long lasting effects.
