The parliamentary committee, which is considering introducing Thailand's casino resorts, said just over 80% of the 3,296 people polled supported the idea. The information was mentioned by a committee spokesperson in Thailand's parliament on Wednesday, according to local media.

The most popular places mentioned were resorts in the Bangkok area, including one known as the Eastern Economic Corridor. The second most popular place was within 100 km (62 miles) of the capital's Donmueang Airport, and the third most ranked place was Thailand's border area, which had permanent immigration checks.

Two weeks ago, a parliamentary committee proposed allowing five casino resorts shared by different locations if Thailand decided to legalise the sector.

Many commentators at GGRAsia have pointed out that public support is essential for the plan to have any chance of success.

A survey released at the National Assembly yesterday also showed that casinos with shopping malls were the most popular. Game courts with spa and massage facilities ranked second in popularity, game courts with bank outlets ranked third in popularity, and free-standing casinos without amenities ranked fourth in popularity.

According to the committee, what are called research visits and seminars in Takshi, Chiang Rai and Sakai, respectively, identified key topics of interest or concern among the public there regarding the legalization of casino businesses.

These include security concerns and measures to prevent illegal gambling, appropriate taxation on such permitted activities, mitigation of location suitability, social impact issues, and the economic development benefits of such facilities.

The casino commission will submit its findings and other information to the speaker on July 27, local media reported.
