It felt natural to him. He didn’t have to memorize phrases in Latin, use a magic wand or draw complicated sigils: all he needed to do was to point at the object he wanted to split, and perceive its separation into reality.


At first, he repeated the feat with the seed, placing it inside the pot again and then removing it with Split. Then, he succeeded in splitting a pair of socks from his closet, a glass of water inside a plastic bottle, and even the cinder sticking to the walls inside the chimney. Was this actual magic? Was learning this ability the culmination of his travels?


Excited, Felix couldn’t wait to show this new ability to his peers, who deemed him an absolute failure, and to the Leader, who was counting the minutes to kick him out. His formal presentation in front of the cult’s high council was scheduled for the next day, which left him no room for mistakes.


‘Tomorrow is going to be a day to remember’, he surely thought.
