A poem for October Second
Jaded Chandalier
A dream had I, at night asleep
upon the street twixt Hill and Grand
A grand mall dream like Wendy saw
from her Apartment to a walk
towards some store at corner left
Tho' once arrived twas more a market
Scene with many folk,
I walked to find that unknown store
and spoke to some along the way
A white haired man conversed with me
can't yet recall what he had said
I walked again and found I had
a mobile jade beneath my hand
a chandalier of bag like size,
I pondered it before my eyes
and walked some more
through crowded mall to where
my sleeping bag lay on the floor
of cottage school...
I slept, awoke and found a roll
of paper bag Six feet in length
had covered o'er
my sleeping place
a girl was there
walked right on by
And then with prod upon my side
I truly woke
to find the pegs of Mandolin
beside my space
And Claude walked by, a gift
from him...
so now I have a Mandolin
I strummed it and it seemed in tune
So chords I played of Kingston Trio
The Merry Minuette
Pray watch it soon on YouTube
or Some o'er Stream
And now white like the dream:
A girl walked by with paper bag
of brown and asked If I some
Muffins just might like...
Another man dropped down a card
of Starbuck type and wished me well
I packed my bags, recalling dream
I went to Starbucks for espresso
and some ice and water steamy
Checked the tuning, found it bleary
Bridge was set in errored place,
Detuned, I slid it back in place
Reversed it too till matched
harmonics and twelvth fret too...
I built a pick, it was too thin
So from a plastic cup of Starbucks
I again a pick constructed, built
and tried some runs of bluegrass
lines once taught myself with Tottle
Jack's fine book at hand
sometime around, near '74 ...
Full fifty years ago and yet again
my hands recalled the notes and
slides and chords and all
I checked the tuning 'gain
and three or four times
adjusted
to G E and C from the
'monica Ed gave me
Then played again, the notes now true
and built a strap of cables two
tied both with thread and Krazy Glue
Think of that dream...
For it came TRUE...

By the way, regarding strange
Coincidence...
I played in church for several years
with a Moog Valve Machinist
named Andy Bialek...
When Andy's wife wondered what
my small instrument was called...
"A Mandolin.. " I said.
'Oh ! That's a nice name ! ' she said...
The next year they named their newborn
daughter:
Amanda Lynn Bialek
(cf Al Bialek ... Philadelphia Experiment)
